Baby hognosed snake

oldfriend Mar 30, 2006 03:37 PM

Hey all. I got home from work today and my neighbor had found a snake at her work and brought it over for me to see. It's obviously a hognosed snake but I would like to positively id which kind. It was found in the Kerrville, Texas area. I wont be keeping this snake but I would like an ID before I realease it.

Thanks all
Me

Thanks. That's what I was leaning towards but the markings didn't match the reference pic that I had. Just wanted to be sure.

Thanks again,

Me

Yeah, the eastern hognose varies widely in its color.

LOL. I would love to man but I think this little one is going to go back to the wild. It's refusing pinkies (go figure) and I'm not about to go lookin for toads all summer. lol

Thanks again

I have had great luck using tree frogs to scent mice. I easily converted an adult male to f/t mice using tree frogs. They loved the toads, but tree frogs where like candy to them. I guess they are harder for them to catch in the wild. I would still be willing to take such a picky eater of your hands, it would be a sacrafice, but I would do it.

Too late. I let it go on friday. It was amazing how good that snakes camo was. I let it go in some scrubby bushes with lots of loose leaves and if you looked away you could hardly find it when you looked back. Amazing animal. Glad I had the chance to interact with it and share some pics with you all.

Peace,
Me
