curious about other pygmy cham set-up "long post"

ndnfeather Jul 29, 2003 03:16 AM

I consider myself the worst cham owner on the planet. yet as some of you have read from my earlier post i found baby pigmies in my tank. yet i read over and over again how they die fast on every one. i did everything wrong and it turned out right. my pygmy i had for over a year in a five gallon tank the was almost sealed to the outside world was feed mostly fruit flies(cheap, easy to grow) rarely gave dusted food. maybe once a month and it was active and chuby till it died. It appeared fully grown when i got it and it only shed once in a year. the humidity was alway above 85 averaged 95 and the temp in the tank was in the 70's. the tank substrate was soil and had all live plants. basically i made my setup so it ran without me all i did was drop food in every other day or so. if was leaving for a few days i would feed him crickets every day for week prior to leaving then drop in a buck of flie when i left. i never provide water cause every morning there was plenty of condensation. seven days went by between its death and when the hatchlings were found. i figure i had to lay the eggs at least a month before it died so that means it did not die from laying the clutch. i saw it doing its thing like usual two days before it was found dead.
i want to know what other are doing. i should add i have been keep chams for over 10 years and this is my first time keeping pygmies.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of answers on set-ups...I'm still figuring mine out, so I'll let others give that input. I wanted to ask you...did you find more than one baby in the tank? I remember you posting about the one, but I'm curious since you say "babies". How is it (or they) doing???
Hope all is well.

I was hoping for babies as I had a clutch due to hatch in about 2 or 3 weeks...my eggs drowned as I had no idea that the water from the dripper had accumulated at the bottom of the tank...it finally got up to the level of the eggs...talk about a bad mommy...you couln't tell from looking that it was too much, but I should have known. I did only use the dripper once per day...I let it run for a bit and then let it run out.

Take care
Kristen
