probing during breading season...

wisema2297 Mar 31, 2006 08:01 AM

due to sperm plugs, couldn't some males probe incorectly as females. I was told to wait till after a shed to get a more accurate probe result.

If there are sperm plugs, why are you probing? That doesn't make sense.
Just a word of caution at probing breeders at this time of year. Many of the gels/creams used to lubricate a probe are also a spermicide.

If you dont know the sex of the snake and are probing to find out the sex a sperm plug could make you think a male was a female..unless ball python biology is a lot different than corns, and it could well be, I was advised by a breeder to wait until right after a shed to probe a suspected female because otherwise it could be a male with a sperm plug that keeps the probe from giving acurate results. I guess when the ball sheds it expells the sperm plug as well.....this is why I was asking on this site about doing the same with corn snakes.

If you can't get an accurate sex why not just try placing them together? That should tell you pretty quickly.

Maybe I'm using the term "sperm plugs" incorrectly, but I have always thought that sperm plugs were what was left behin in the female after a successful copulation by the male, to keep other males from effectively fertilizing any eggs and to possibly fertilizer another clutch later on.

So, wouldn't a snake with sperm plugs present be a female anyway???

Also, assuming my use of the term is at all correct, I am not aware of corns using sperm plugs anyway. Anyone have any evidence of this being the case?

If my terminology is off...so will be my questions, of course.
