schwartzenstobe Mar 31, 2006 08:25 AM

Hello, I have had silkworm eggs in my fridge for about 5 months and I took them out this monday, I have been keeping them on the window sill because it is nice and warm about 75-80 with temp gon, however they have not hatched yet, Is it to soon to know or will it take longer? Thanks Matt

What is your humididity level? I keep mine in a petri dish with a semi-wet cotton ball. Ususally takes between 7-10 to hatch.
What color are they? Are they dimpled, look dehydrated? Are you sure they are still good?

These eggs were awesome... 100% hatch rate and they started hatching out at 6 days out of the fridge...
I was out of town when it happened and had to get on my brother about micro-managing the eggs! LOL, He was freaking out...

Holy toledo..!!!!!!!!!!! I can even see the hairs on that silkworm hatchling. Didn't even know they HAD hairs. LOL

What kind of camera or lens are you using?
Great picture!

thanks, my brother took the pics while I was out of town. The eggs started hatching a few days earlier then expected and he freaked out. He took pics and emailed them to me so I can look and make sure they were o.k.! These were literally like 5 minutes old. You can see the white eggs in the back, those guys had just hatched out, it's cool to watch because the closer they get to hatching, the thinner the egg shell seems to get and you can see the little worm inside the egg. I've got another batch hatching out this coming week, and of course I'll be out of town, so I'm sure my brother will get more pics. LOL He used my Cannon G6 powershot camera with no additional attachments.

Try putting a lid on it with a few holes and A cotton ball that is wet with warm water. (not dripping wet) That should help increase your humidity. I keep my eggs in the bathroom on top of the medicine cabinet, so the get the moisture from the showers and the light/heat from the track lighting about the sink. Let me know how it goes and post some picks if you can!

if you are not sure of their viability post a good pic of them and I (we) should be able to tell you if they have collapsed. I have pics somewhere but cannot find them

As feenie said, it is helpful to keep them in some humidity and warmth. I hatch mine out in a petri dish that sits on top of the strip light. The bottom heat is perfect.

Did you say you have them in the sun? NOT a good idea - you can fry them. Warmth but not direct sun.
