Varanus salvator salvator in the field

mrcota Mar 31, 2006 09:58 AM

Pictured is a female V. s. salvator is pictured in the field of Khlong Luang District of Pathum Thani, Thailand- about 1km from my home. The female pictured chased a smaller male higher up the same tree. Early in the hot season, the area is very dry and the V. salvator do not stray away from the permanent bodies of water.

Cheers,
Michael

Great pic! How high up is the monitor? Do you see them often in the trees?

The V. s. salvator pictured is about 4m up the tree. The one it was chasing was much higher. I usually see them on the ground or in the water. Although they are very common in the swamps of the central flood plains (of the Chao Phraya River) where there is elephant grass, they are most commonly found where there are patches of trees and never far from water.
