Little hisser question

buffysmom Mar 31, 2006 12:46 PM

I'm new to hognoses & was given a cute little yearling green phase western. I named her Addy the Adder because she was pretty scared when we got her & she was doing the puff adder thing- flaring her neck & hissing loudly. I got her on 3/18. She had since calmed down & was fine. But now, for the last 3 days she's just moving around her cage hissing & puffed up. I figured she might be hungry (it'd been 7 days), so I gave her a small meal yesterday. She calmed down, but today is back to hissing & puffing up. I've even tried covering her cage to decrease stimulation, but I could even hear her hissing from under the cover.
Any suggestions?

Give her time. I had a female eastern that never stopped (thus the name Ms. Hissy) Anytime we walked into the room, she sounded like Darth Vader, LOL. Was fine to hold and all, just testy about our presence in "her" room! Others, did it for about a month before they calmed down.

What size enclousure is she in? Does she have a hide? Without a hide, or in an enclosure to small, mine would be very nervous and aggitated.

Hope that helps some.

She's in a 10 gallon w/ two hides & a LOT of aspen. She spends a lot of time under the aspen, but also comes out several times a day and cruises around. I'm holding her several times a week 'cause I've had her for several weeks & I'm trying to socialize her.

Howe much are you feeding her and how often? They are stout little snakes, sounds like she might just be a little hungry.........and irritated. LOL

I also thought that might be the problem, so I fed her a small meal yesterday. It seemed to help (it'd been 7 days since her last meal). However, I had her out today just chillin' on my computer & all of a sudden she puffed up & started hissing again!

Need to feed more frequently. Aim for a feeding every 4 days isntead of every 7 (or more) days. Hogs eat a lot and digest pretty fast.
