Hatchlings shells growing too fast,

jasonmills Mar 31, 2006 05:17 PM

I have nine 3toed hatchling from last summer, they are my Hurricane Katrina suprises.Three of the hatchlings have large shells, almost twice the size of the others. All the hatchlings have the same size heads and legs ,the 3 large ones have a hard time getting around, what would cause the extremely large shells on just 3 out of the 9.They eat mealworms and crickets every other day.

It would be better in replying to this question if you could show us a picture; so we can do justice to your answer.

Many types of shell aberrations can occurr due to light intensity of UVB / D3 toxity / phosphorus & calcium balance/ high levels of protein in their diet/ along with an improper saturation of moist air - humidity. Sometimes the cause is a combination of a few of that previously stated.
**It's also possible that their is nothing wrong with your boxie...genetic variation.

So if you can, show us a pic!

Thanks,

I agree, we'd really need a pic or two. I'm more concerned about the fact that you say the large ones have a hard time getting around.

Better still, take them to a vet that has experience with turtles. I think there's a herp vet search system online. There's little to nothing we can do for you over this forum, but a vet may be able to help you out with something as small as a few vitamin/mineral injections. For husbandry, it's the same ole' thang...UVA/UVB, proper varied diet, humidity, and supplementation. Good luck, it would be a shame if something goes wrong with a clutch that's had such good fortune so far.
