Turtles in Pools

colorfulcritters Mar 31, 2006 09:01 PM

My little yb got out of his tank the other day and took a dip in my pool. I luckily found him, perhaps within 12 hours, at the bottom of the deep end. He seemed fine.

But now he's not eating and seems to want to sun all the time. I'm wondering if he's gotten ill.

Can chlorinated water have severe and adverse effects for turtles? Is there anything I can do to de-chlorinate him?

He must've drunk some, or absorbed quite a bit, so I'm wondering if he will get sick or even die.

Chlorinated water should only cause his eyes discomfort. I would be more concerned with escape proofing his tank. Wanting to sun all the time is not a bad thing for turtles, its quite natural.

What do you keep him in, how much water is in it, what is the water temp, how big is he, how long have you had him, what do you feed him?

pics of the tank would help too.

Agreed. Essentially if we can drink it the water with little effect, he should as well. Perhaps the chlorinated water may have upset his gut flora a little. I would just observe him to see if he starts gaping, gasping for air when he is basking or swimming or swimming lopsided. This would indicate some sort of infection.
