i have live in nc my whole life the only thing i have learned is most of the people here kill a snake when they see it then check to see what it was..... i had a "step cousin" get me into snakes and she was the only female i have met that was into them and she no longer lives in nc.

repzoo44 Apr 01, 2006 10:56 AM

My ex liked them just fine so there is hope. Funny enough, she is no longer in the state either. Actually, I dont really care if they like them, just so long as they arent freaked out by them. But liking them would be a lot better. And hot, really hot, man Im shallow, lol.

Look at it on the bright side. You're probably not an overweight 42 year old engineer who's looking for a hot babe who likes snakes. That's a very tough sell.

that I talk to over the phone from the buisness call me a "rare breed", which is funny cause even if I didn't have Ball pythons, I am still racially very unique, so I guess it's a common thing for me to be different.

And if you must know, I am half Chinese, Half Black with a smidge of Native American and other stuff...

Honestly, I have to wonder how difficult it is to find a woman who likes snakes. They are so sensual! But that's just me.

Good luck to those searching for a soul mate.. She's out there!

And if you must know, I am half Chinese, Half Black with a smidge of Native American and other stuff...

I was involved over the internet with a lady whose parents were from Cuba and Jamaica. (I've forgotten which parent was from which.) She said that her ancestry was African, Spanish, and Caribe Indian. When we first met, we exchanged instant messages for two or three weeks before she mentioned her racial background. She hinted very strongly, but she didn't come out and say anything because she wasn't sure what I'd feel about an interracial relationship. I'd never before and have never since met a woman with whom I could have such good conversations, and racial background was irrelevant. Distance and situation doomed our relationship, but she was a neat lady. My life was too crazy at that point to think about owning a pet, so we never discussed snakes that I can remember. She was so cool about so many things that I can't imagine her having that big a problem with them.

She hung out with some friends who likewise had interesting ancestral mixes, and we had some interesting conversations on the topic. She hit me with the "What if you saw me and some other hot 'mixed' friends at a club? Would you approach any of us?" The reality is that I'm too shy in those settings to approach anyone regardless of how vanilla she may appear, but she made me realize that I tend to think that an exotic-looking woman would have no interest in me. Her counter was, "Well, I'm interested, so why wouldn't someone else be?" She really helped me not to write off myself or anyone else too quickly. Of course, even she admitted that when we first met, she found me very strange.

Honestly, I think most people who find out who are the herpers in the world, due to the stigma, consider anyone who likes that many reptiles to be rather strange.

I know I get very suprised looks when I mention it, and some people don't believe me until they see my website. And that is people I know!

Hey, Herpers are people too!

I told my friend a few months ago that I felt like I was coming out of the closet. After he finished gagging on his food that he was eating, I explained. You see, when I was a little kid, from about the age of 4 or 5, I wanted to work with snakes for a living. I was constatnly reading, researching, catching, or doing anything else that I could regarding reptiles. That lasted until about high school, when I learned it wasn't "normal" for someone to be so infatuated with reptiles. I went "into" the closet at that point (along with my steve irwin and dart frog t-shirts). After high school, I started to stop caring what was "normal" and what wasn't, I guess some people call that growing up. So I got back into snakes, and now that I am here, I dont feel weird for knowing about or caring for snakes the way that I do now. I feel as though I came out of the "reptile" closet.

But yes, there are still times when I keep my mouth shut about my hobby. Not hiding it, just not devulging information (i.e. job interviews, meeting a girls parents, etc...). Okay, thats enough from me today. Stay strong boys and girls, and tosha too, we are in the minority, but thats okay with me!

~Johnny

Nisa Apr 01, 2006 10:30 PM

Yeah I've noticed most people don't understand reptiles and it really can take on a don't ask don't tell feel. While I do occasionally bow to socity, I've never been one to stay in a closet well

Ive never shyed away from talking about my snakes. Ive had several people tell me that I was weird, but not in a bad way, just a strange way. After being around folks for some time and talking about the snakes, they sometimes see its not really any different than their cross stitching collection. lol

I keep telling my daughters that if everyone was normal how boring would the world be?? Much more fun to be yourself as different as we all are. My daughters love their snakes and show them off. And we recently had John Acorn (The Nature Nut) do a presentation for us at our local herp club meeting and telling us about as a child he bought a dead goliath beetle to mount and add to his collection and how all the kids laughed about him buying a dead beetle, he is a great guy, smart, funny and even had his own tv show. Who is laughing now Be whoever you are and don't ever worry about all the wannabe's in life that are trying to 'fit in'.

That's true. As I think about it, I realize that my finally buying snakes coincided with my giving up on the idea of finding a lady to share my life. I'm different anyway, and I figured snakes would be the thing that might disqualify me in the eyes of my last chance. Once I figured that my chance was gone, I figured I'd finally get some snakes.

There is someone out there for everyone. And even better, there are multiple someones out there for everyone. Its just a matter of time and keeping your eyes open. And when you least expect it...........................at least thats what I think anyway. Dont give up just yet. I mean hell, there are women who fall in love with criminals behind bars, just through letters. Are you telling me you dont have more to offer than some guy in a 10 by 10 cell whos valentine consists of a 3 minute phone call and a bad poem written in blood on a chipped off piece of cell wall that he had to smuggle out through a bodily orifice. C'mon.

to be quiet honest, im not your normal guy, i dont date females, but i actually dont date or see anyone for that matter.... life can be kind of difficult, i have episodes of seizures, and delayed speech, so if i am out i usually have a friend with me so if i have a hard time talking they talk for me, and a few months ago i was diagnosed with chronic fatigue, so i am pretty happy with my animals where i can stay in my house and keep to my self.

LadyOhh Apr 01, 2006 03:12 PM

I'm sorry to hear that.

But that is another reason why animals as companions are so great! They take care of you as much as you take care of them, in a sense.

You mentioned e-harmony, but they aren't a sure thing. I took their "free $40 profile," and the answer was "Sorry, Bill, we can't help you." They say that they reject about 20% of the people who take the profile, so they aren't always a good "last resort" on which we can rest our hopes.

Anyway, that's a very nice picture. I gather from the "was" in your post that you found someone. Congrats to both of you (especially him).

i know what you mean i have been known to ask people to leave my home because of my dog, they way i look at it is its her house as well as mine and i dont lock her up in a room for company, just cause someone is uncomfortable around a chow chow, its not the dog generally its the way they are raised.
one friend who would never come to my home got brave enough to come visit he fell in love with my chow, said she was like a big cuddly teddy bear, she is a very friendly dog. the other funny thing was he kept dozing off....even though he was a bit nervous at first about me having snakes..... a few days later he said my house was very calm and relaxing and there was no tension....he felt relaxed enough to keep dozing off.

twps Apr 01, 2006 06:31 PM

Looks like you guys need some help. Chances are that you are not going to find that snake loving girl at the bar, so where do you look? The first place that comes to mind would be pet stores. Girls who are afraid of snakes usually dont work at them and you get the added bonus of not hearing "eeekk a spider kill it kill it." Be that customer who is friendly "but not in a creepy way" and work from there. As someone with inside knowlege it's just as hard for thoses girls to find someone, because 1)Even though most herpers are guys we are still a minority, think about most of your guy friends "only good snake is a dead snake" kind of guys. 2)Most guys dont have the same respect for animals as we do and that doesnt sit well with an animal lover. It worked for me met my wife at a pet store. Second place would maybe be a local herp society meeting smae probaly applies there although girls would probably be outnumbered or already commited. Worst case senario you make some new herp friends, but maybe they know a girl for you. Third place would maybe be a zoo same idea. You guys are thinking to much, If I need groceries I go to the grocerey store, need gas go to the gas station, need someone how understands your snake obsession go where the snakes are.

The bad thing about pet stores is the snake food (rodents) is always so close to the snake room so its hard to pick up girls who also like bunnies and rats lol .... Reptile swaps are the logical "reptle chick grounds" lol ( i sound so sexist lol) I dont know ..the way i figure it is if they didn't like reptiles they wouldnt be there! lol Take it for what its worth lol ... I dont know im just not the type just to walk up to some one and start conversation though lmao.... If you want to be a reptile lady magnet walk around with a expensive animal or a styro full lol

Before you start courting the cute pet store girl ask her for help with the reptiles. Pet store I'm in has 3 out of ten that don't really like the snakes. And 5 out of them really don't like the spiders. Only one will really mess with the scorpions. Though that is at the moment.Next new one maybe drop dead, single, and really love the reptiles. I've seen a few like that go through.

BTW I'm a demo person for dog food in the pet store and not one of your normal workers. Though I'n not normal on anything

Actually, the "Orlando Bloom" snakes are my mom's. We both use this nickname, so I list all the snakes in the house. Nothing against Orlando, just that Mom named those. The first one, I told her had to have an elf-type name, she decided to name him Legolas because he was, the first Legolas died almost immediately and she wanted to name the second the same name. When I argued, she threatened with Armolas, so I gave in. Orlando came from the fact that so many corns have Florida related names, and Orlando playing Legolas in the movies. So, she comes up with weird names, but they're her snakes.

Not to make you all jealous but I cant resist expressing my gratitude for the love of my life. I lucked out with my wife. Shes a high school biology teacher that had never touched a snake until she met me. Now its two years since we were married and our bedroom is completely dominated by our snakes (moslty balls and boas). I have many racks and incubators etc within inches of where we sleep.

Talk about the wierd looks and comments WE get. We only have a one bedroom apt so theres only one place to keep em all for now. Shes not particularly "into or addicted" like I am but she gives me all the support I could ask for and has gotten quite used to them.

Im a lucky man and I dont take it for granted. Not to mention she paid for most of them too. What can I say, she loves me. And sure as hell love her.
