Bedding: Aspen -vs- Ground-up Terrarium stuff

sab3156 Jul 29, 2003 08:11 AM

I have a baby ball python, and I was wondering........ Is Aspen better than that Ground-up Terrarium stuff that resembles large grains of sand? On the bag, it says like "Safer to use than sand!" The people at the Petshop encouraged me to use it instead of Aspen. But I have had much success with Aspen in the past, and a lot of people seem to use it. What do you guys suggest? He was in the Terrarium stuff in the shop, so I dunno. The Colombian Redtails that were in the tank with him seemed REALLY stressed out (one of them was close to death), as they didn't provide the snakes with adequate hiding places. It was a pity. But this Ball Python had just been brought in, so I decided to take him Could the stress have also been caused by their bedding?

good luck, first of all! but you should examine what you've already told us, and you'll find your answers!!

1. The people at the Petshop encouraged me to use it instead of Aspen. He was in the Terrarium stuff in the shop, so I dunno.

--HIGHER PROFIT MARGIN!!!! (not to mention ignorance...) any sand type stuff is bad, it can clog their vent, cause respiratory problems, among other things. and it's more expensive!!!

2. The Colombian Redtails that were in the tank with him seemed REALLY stressed out (one of them was close to death)!!!

--they were stressed out because THERE IS NO WAY THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE TANK WITH BALL PYTHONS!!!! different species from different continents housed together is a BIG red flag that the store has no idea/doesn't care AT ALL about taking care of their animals, just getting them in and selling them.

Aspen is soooooo much better for snakes. so you can discount the 'sand' stuff entirely. Choose between Aspen or newspaper, you and your snake will be perfectly fine!

good luck again!
