I know it's not a fox snake.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say 'lyre snake'.

oldherper May 19, 2003 06:23 PM

Without knowing what location you are in I would say Great Plains Rat

Elaphe vulpina vulpina, Western Fox snake!

meretseger May 20, 2003 05:02 PM

I used to HAVE a Western fox, for the love of pete! Seemed to have a different color and pattern from the picture .

vulpina from E. gloydi, (and refused to stooping to opening a book!) I retain my dignity. (I hope, LOL).

I actually picked a crummy picture to throw you guys off and make the guessing a bit more interesting. Here is a better pic...it was a very pretty snake. The colors are also muted on this page compared to the actual photo.

This shot looks less to me like a fox snake than a Pituophis.

Check out the head. Especially the camouflage lines through the eyes. I would say Pituophis cantifer...Gopher!
