Red-Foot pen

draybar Apr 01, 2006 07:36 PM

I adopted a Red-Foot tortoise a few years ago from a local pet store and have been keeping him in a 4ft x 6ft indoor enclosure during the winter and a 16ft x 8ft outdoor enclosure during the summer.
Well, I expanded his outdoor enclosure to 16ft x 16ft today.
He seems to enjoy it.

Nice size pen. I've looked the photo over and I can't find the tort. Is he in the pen? I have been working on a pen for this summer and I found out something very interesting. 2by 12 lumber is cheaper then 1 by 12. Go figure. Tom

Overall, that looks GREAT! But, the water trough has me concerned. Why? It appears in one of the pics to be 'steep' on the sides and pretty deep (maybe 4" or more?). The problem could be this: The tortoise could walk/fall in and not be able to get back out. Even worse could be if the tortoise were to fall on its back into the water (upside down). In this scenario it would surely drown if it's too deep and does not have 'foot holds' to turn itself back over with. I use water troughs and fill the bottom with large (3" river stones or even red bricks until there is about an inch of water or so. Tortoises DO the worst things (unintentionally) and I try to plan for any situation. I've never had a tortoise die in a water trough, but know people who have and I never want it to happen. So, I hope this helps maybe in some way. In all, that's a nice place for your tort to live!

Thanks for your concern Matt.
There are a couple of bricks in the water dish.
Rah travels in and out of the dish at will.
The only problem being, that is his favortie place to defecate.
By the way...Although, I just extended the pen to 16ft x 16ft he has been living in that pen at 16ft x 8ft since 2001.
At least during the summer months.
As stated before, he has an indoor home for the cooler months.

and for the other poster that asked if he was in any of the pics...
he is in the second picture.
If you look at the water dish and then to the left of that approximately 2 1/2 to 3ft you will see Rah next to his feeding stone. (an octagonal paving stone)

Oh, and just in case..........He had extreme pyrimiding when I rescued/adopted him so, although I appreciate the concern, I do not need a lecture on how to feed him.
