HerpGirl Jul 29, 2003 09:16 AM

we just got a food processor so i have been using it to cut food for my herbivorous herps(like igs and uros)anyway,it makes the food really wet which causes it to mold in the cage if left in for even a few hours...big problem. does anyone know how to keep it from happening? also i wanted to know if i could cut up large quantitys and freeze it or put it in the fridge? if thats possibly how long can you keep it? thanks

The food shouldn't be going bad that fast, something is wrong. Mabey your food processor needs a good cleaning, or you need fresher greens? Freezing veggies destroys many vitamins (especially vit B) that are essential to an iguanas diet. It also makes the greens very soggy and not very palatable- at least to my ig. I found it to be easier to fix the food at night so that you can just clean everything up at the same time you clean up after dinner. Keeping it overnight in the fridge works out just fine for me, but I usually try to make it in the morning so that it is as fresh as possible.
Hope this helps,
Stefano

I use a food processor all the time. I store the cut food in a salad bowl with a lid. It keeps for 3-4 days. I scoop out the salad on put it on paper plates and add fruit, which is stored separately. Do not add water to this salad.
