Brown House Snake

phiber_optikx Apr 02, 2006 04:33 AM

I am needing information on the brown house snake (zululand?) Lamprophis capensis. All I am needing is information on disposition and anything that is care specific for this snake. Thanks for your help.

Hey,

When I purchased a hatchlig example of one of thse beautiful animals last fall, this webpage told me EVERYTHING about this snake's captive care requirements, taxonomy, and even a bit about its natural history. I hope it does the same for you:

Well, taxonomy?
Can someone tell me just WHAT the capensis is?
All I read was that some part of the fuliginosus have been given this name - but which ones and what distinguishes them
(anything visible?)

I've been looking for an answer to that for some time...

I did a little looking around. It appears that they just switched Lamprophis fuliginosus to Lamprophis capensis. I am not sure but I beleieve it may only be in the South African species. I don't know of any reason for this but hey, that's taxonomy for you!

Well thanks for the answer
but my concern is that with CBs
you mostly won't know where they
(i.e. the parents/..) come from,
so you'll have to risk interbreeding
the new different species.

But I guess I'll just breed the ones I have...
enjoy yours!

Thanks for the help. I was already well aware of Chris' site. I just was trying to get some info on Lamprophis capensis. I can't find it anywhere.

housesnakes are exelant first snakes .great temperment and agressive feeders .you should keep male and female apart or they will breed year round.my female had 4 batches of eggs in one year.

goregrind Apr 05, 2006 03:09 PM

4 batches a year! youd think they would be cheaper than corns with the rate they breed

I intend to get one this summer . Do you find a difference between male and female as far as color, tempermeant, etc ?

I know males are smaller . I had always thought they were possible snake eaters and even if fed seperate pairs should not be kept together guess not .

I read they are great feeders .

goregrind Apr 05, 2006 03:05 PM

theres a caresheet here on ks for african house snakes(they are the same thing)

Yes they are but they aren't. Lamprophis capensis is a ssp. and I wanted to make sure there was nothing different in the requirements and disposition.

"Capensis" is just a taxonomic revision for South African variants of the Brown House Snake, Lamprophis fuliginosis. But care and virtually everything about fuliginosis and capensis is identical.
