How long do you quarantine for?

HerpHobbiest Apr 02, 2006 12:33 PM

Say you get a Boa from another breeder...

The Boa appears fine, no mites or visible problems.

How long do you quarantine for?

Just wandering.

Regards, Luis.

Minimum 60 days, even if the new animal appears healthy.

Ideally have the animal checked out by a vet, fecal exam included.

If the animal turns out to have an illness, allow it time to recover with appropriate treatment and give it another 30 days after being treated to ensure it's healthy.

I like Kristine's numbers, but heres something to fry your brain esp. since you're talking about boas.

2 years ago I had my mother, and litter of baby boas at a herp show. Standard stuff for a breeder right? They've been kept seperate since then, and have had no other access to other boas or pythons since then. From that show, there was a ball python which likely died from IBD, but it wasn't 100% confirmed. Well, last month, of the 6 babies I had left, 4 died withen a day of clinical signs setting in, and pathology confirmed IBD. Of the few babies I"ve sold, no others have had similar fates, but I have attempted to contact all the owners of the possibility of contamination.

Sooooo, while any length of time for quarantine is used to weed out possibly sick animals, no length of time will be perfect.

I completely agree, no period of quarantine time is long enough to rule out all communicable illnesses.
