maybe I was dreaming, but...

I couldve sworn i read a couple articles about the possibility of Dumeril's boas being cannibalistic, comparing them to kingsnakes. did anyone else read of this? was it ever proven? does anyone remember the site(s) the article(s) were posted?

in a number of different places. The boa books I've got mention
that as well as most Dumerils sites I've seen...

Here were a couple of sites I found...I'm sure there is more:

http://redtailboa.net/forums/showthread.php?t=13224&page=1 Quote: "3- Because they WILL eat each other even if they are the same size...NEVER house dumerils together or with any other snake that you don't want to be eaten.

We had a case here not long ago...someone I gave a baby colombian boa to was moving and put a baby boa in a tote with a young (2 or so year old) Dumeril and ended up with one less snake as a result."

I heard that you should watch them during breeding as well, because you never know! But I'm sure there are people out there who have had no problem cohabitating them. I would err on the side of caution though!

Look back within the archives if you have to, but I have only been actively looking at this forum since last June, so you shouldn't have to look too far back.

There was a thread that was about this - apparently a Dumeril's boa ate a ball python, hopefully it wasn't too high-dollar, but it still would be terrible!

It does make sense to me, as there have also been numerous remarks to the effect that one of the main staples that baby Dumeril's boas are thought to feed on in the wilds of Madagascar are lizards - as there are tons and tons of little geckos and things like that there... and, well, the nose of a snake probably resembles the nose of a lizard, in the opinion of another snake, ya know?
Just some thoughts

keep my baby/juvenile Dumerils together....EVER! From the time I pull them out of the mothers cage, they're kept seperate. I don't group them up for transport, mix them up while cleaning cages, or whatever. Now, consequently, I've never had a baby dumerils eat another baby dumerils, or any other snake. BUT....I have had a female eat a live baby once. I saw the babies, opened the cage up, and started pulling babies. There was one baby that wasn't up and going like the rest so I chose to leave it in the cage and after it shed(happens SOON after birth with Dumerils) I'd pull it. Well, when I went back to pull it, the mother had eaten it. I do know of a few stories of Dumerils eating other Dumerils. Are they cannibals? In one sense, I say sure....proof is in the pudding so to speak. But, is this "natural"? I don't consider putting two snakes into the same plastic sweater box, deli-cup, or pillow case exactly natural, so then to judge the outcome of such situations as natural is difficult at best-IMO. As far as them feeding on lizards, I've tried and had no success......anyone else tried? If so, what were your results? Take care

Paul
