Is there such a thing as a Tiger Rat?

Star_Of_Life Apr 02, 2006 09:41 PM

I was in the pet store today and the guy there showed me a four foot long "Tiger Rat Snake" that was all black with yellowish blotches here and there on it. It was a really nice snake very docile and had just shed a complete shed so it was healthy , but I've been looking on here for info on it and can't seem to find any. Is it a real Rat snake or just something being called a rat snake to be sold? PS: he said it was no an Elaphe genus snake but something that began with an "St"

Yes there are such things as Tiger Rat snakes. Here is a link or two about them if you are interested:

This is our third year in producing Spilotes pullatus pullatus (9 eggs in the incubator this year and the female will be laying her second clutch in about 10-11 days). I've written a caresheet for them and I continue to add to it the more I learn about them from my personal experience working with these wonderful snakes.

Spilotes care

Here's a pic of last year's holdback...

If you have any questions that the caresheet doesn't answer for you, feel free to post here or e-mail us.

You mean this big boy?

Not the greatest pic of him. This is a friend of ours with him, pic was taken by her father at our local expo late last year.

i was gonna warn the original poster that almost all are wild-caught and probably with parasites;but i'm glad to see someone captive-breeding this awesome species!
