distended abdomen

P_Reticulatus Apr 02, 2006 09:49 PM

Im sorry for all the health posts, but I guess Im just in worry mode or something. Anyway one of my female retics has scale rot on a few of he ventral scales. I brought her to the vet and he prescribed baytril daily for a month orally, and im on day 18. Anyway I fed th snake a small rat about nine days ago which she has not defecated yet. I fed her a large rat yesterday. Ive noticed the area of her body next to the vent is distended slightly with what feels like fluid. This os also wher the infected scales are. The infected scale area almost cinstricts the distended area, giving it the appearence of blockage. Could this be a form of constipation. Figuring she should have defecated a while ago. Should I talk to the vet? How is constipation usually treated?

Thanks a alot,
Nick Arms

What you are describing here sounds like it might be a prolapse. Is this protrution of flesh pinkish flesh sticking out of the vent itself? If so it is probably a prolapsed rectum and you should see a vet about it immeditely. Sometimes this tissue can be reinserted into the body and heal, but this does not always work and it may need to be stitched in place.

If I got anything wrong I'm sure one of the more scholarly forum herp marms will come along and correct me and set the record straight, lol. I myself have only experienced this condition once and I carefully reinserted the prolapsed tissue after lubing and treating the tissue with triple antibiotic ointment and it held and the female went on to have a normal life with normal defecations.

I hope this helps y'all in some way.

Its not a prolapse because nothing is protruding, thanks for helping.
