most reptile shows this time of year

xblackheart Apr 03, 2006 01:17 AM

Are most shows pretty slim cuttings this time of year? I have never been to a show before summer when all the babies have just hatched. Is there really any point going this time of year? I am about to drive 7 hours on thursday to get to san diego for the reptile show. Should expect very little?

Last year I went to a show on may 21. I was disapointed. But only because there were only like 7 tables and only 3 of them even had snakes. There were high end balls (pieds, spiders, etc.) Hondos, kings, and a few corns. Also, there were some raccoons. There was 1 breeder who had about 20 balls for $15 a piece. My brother picked one up. My brother took horrible care of him (had him AND a redtail together in a 10 gallon for about 2 months) I rescued him and he didn't eat for about 3 months. I am not sure if he would not eat from the beginning (breeder said he was eating) or if it was the husbandry that did it. I think I will head back up and pick up 5 or so and if all goes well I may have some for sale soon.

the reptile show here in richmond, va had alot of boas, pythons, kings...thayeri. only a very few corns and rats. only 1 table had 2 beardies and the only leopard geckos in the entire show. AND i got there almost as soon as they opened the doors.

I was at East Coast Colubrids table at the Richmond show and he sold almost all of the corns he brought. There were some nice animals there but mostly left over 05s. Yes this time of year is usually pretty slow until the eggs start hatching and a couple of pinks have been digested.

BlueKing (Z) was also at that table with us. I think he sold everything he brought with him!

The one in Birmingham, AL was looking a bit small, but I've been noiticing more things each month. I try to go there because you sometimes have people bring in pet BPs that they don't want anymore and to pic-up my frozen foods.

I went to the one in Birmingham in Jan. and picked up a baby hypo colombian redtail. I plan on taking a friend there in May, because he wants to get some beardies. But as to the oringinal post I will agree with what others say, you will find a very good selection around July and August.

Are you talking about the one in delmar? I went to it last year and it was pretty good. I will also be attending it this saturday.

xblackheart Apr 03, 2006 01:53 PM

ya, I am going to the one in Del Mar. I will also be there on saturday. I am from the Sacramento area and have to drive 7 hours, but we are leaving on Thursday and making a weekend out of it. If you see anyone dressed in all black, say hi! It will be me. LOl. Check out this, if you want to know who I am. www.myspace.com/xblackheart
I looked at the pictures (from the IRBA website) and it doesn't look as big as the one that I go to in Sac every summer. Of course that one is not until September this year. I guess it is so much bigger than last year, that they had to get a different room and it was only available in September. I know the guy who puts the show on and I told him he is trying to kill me with anticipation by having it so late in the year!!

A lot of times there may not be many vendors but it can be a good time to find breeders getting rid of yearlings at great prices.
Trying to make room for the new babies on the way.

Stock seems thinner, but sometimes you come across some incredible deals. People moving extra adults just out of brumination or trying to unload the last of the previous year before the new clutches start hatching. I've gone to a few winter, early spring shows in the last few years and among other things have picked up a hatchling albino nelson's for $25 because it was left over from the previous summer and more recently a pair of adult banana cal kings (female is 4 to 5 ft and weighs in over 800g) for next to nothing. You may not find the vast selections that you come across at some of the summer shows, but there are still great deals if you look. After all of that though, I'm still not sure I'd drive 7 hours.

xblackheart Apr 04, 2006 12:47 PM

Well, I plan on going to the Zoo, which I was told is awesome and I have never been there. Even if the reptile show is a bummer, I will be doing other things to make it worth it.
I just had my hopes up for this show, and now I have come to realize to not expect too much for this time of year. It is better than walking through the door expecting so much and being sorely disapointed. I won't expect too much and maybe I will be surprised!
