RES and snails

the_nis Apr 03, 2006 07:20 AM

I was curious if it would be ok to put a couple snails in my RES' aquarium to maybe eat some of the leftover food that sinks to the bottom and to control the algae. But, my turtle is fairly aggresive so would it be safe if he would happen to eat the snails? Thanks!

I couldnt say about pet store snails. I usually keep a couple crayfish in the bottom of my turtles tank to eat scraps. And if the turtle ever eats them thats ok too.

I never thought about crayfish before. Do you purchase them in the store or catch them in the wild. I can catch a ton of them around my house so that wouldn't be a problem.

Ooooh be very careful with doing that. Crayfish carry a bacterium that can cause shell rot in turtles and wild caught feeder items will carry more parasites that will infect your turtles than store bought feeders will. The hard exoskeleton of crayfish can also block your turtle's intestines so if you decide to use them as food, be really careful. Make sure you have the turtles tested for parasites on a regular basis, 1-2 times per year when you feed live foods from any source.
