idealreptiles about het red axanthics

RinL Apr 03, 2006 07:23 AM

here is my experience with them. i produce two clutches last year by breeding my het red axanthic male to two different females. the appearance of the females is quite variable. some are obvious hets and some are not as obvious. they don't all have black backs. there is a variability with all the characteristics. the hunter's guide lists what to look for but all het reds don't have all the characteristics.below are pics of the two clutches and you can see the differences. here in the first clutch you will see a great deal of variability. snake #1 is the one i posted below. he lacks the black back but the other characteristic are there, such as the broken neck stripe, squiggles, and the color and blushing on his back. snake #2 has a black back on the anterior one third (a little hard to see). #3 is very much in between. i think it is a het but i will hold her back and breed her to be sure. #4 is a normal. #5 is a het with a nearly complete black back.

here is the second clutch. the hets in this one are very obvious and carry all the characteristics. Snakes #1,2,and 3 are the hets. you can see black backs on all of them. #4 is a normal. when you have a clutch like this it is easy to tell the hets. on my first clutch i wasn't sure and i asked ralph davis and corey woods to look at pics. they both gave me the exact same answer about which were het reds. i hope this helps.
