here is my experience with them. i produce two clutches last year by breeding my het red axanthic male to two different females. the appearance of the females is quite variable. some are obvious hets and some are not as obvious. they don't all have black backs. there is a variability with all the characteristics. the hunter's guide lists what to look for but all het reds don't have all the characteristics.below are pics of the two clutches and you can see the differences.
