AWD breeding

mrfisher Apr 03, 2006 12:31 PM

Is there anything in particular to do to promote breeding in these guys? I keep mine in the basement with a drafty door nearby (it's a walkout basement) so they feel the temperature changes outside (They have a heatlamp on all day but it will get cooler at night in the winter than summer). I shortened the heatlamp (and fluo. lamp) time to 9 hours a day over winter and have brought it back up to 12 hours.

I put in a tall rubbermaid (18L x 6W x 12H) in one end of their tank near the heatlamp full of cypress mulch for digging and laying eggs I suppose. What else can I do? Day temp is 90 under the lamp, and big water basin is at the other end of the 6' tank.

Just wondering if everyone is a CWD owner or if there's any Australian water dragon owners in this group.

Mr. F,

I have 3 AWDs (2.1) but they are still less than a year old and are juveniles. I purchased them from Agama International and I believe that site has some information on breeding them. I do know an approximately 2 month hibernation period with temperatures in the 55*F range is recommended, if not required. I know that isn't much help, but I'm sure there is information out there for you. Good luck,

Chuck H.

Thanks for the response Chuck. I've read several pages about them (including breeding) but was hoping to get feedback from someone who'd actually done it. I've read Agama's site and printed it out to keep with my other AWD material.

I've never dealt with Agama, but would they open to sharing info to peeps in the cold white north if I called?

I have 3 Australian water dragons, 1 adult male and 2 adult females. I've had them for about 19 months.
