Baby Ornates, updated Pics

rick millspaugh Apr 03, 2006 03:12 PM

I took some new pics of my baby Ornates. They have grown! I have had them for three months and they are really taking off. It amazes me how much they eat. I used the same cage to photograph them in but I have them separated now into three different cages. I would like to thin down to just one pair now but I still am not sure on sexing them (help is welcomed).

The first two pics are new, taken yesterday out in the sun; the last pic was taken almost three months ago on the same log, easy to see how they have taken off.

Nice animals!
From the first two Pics I would say, you have 1,2 with the male being the animal on the top.

Ingo,
Thanks for the information. If you do not mind, I need some clarification though; there are four (4) Uro’s in the two new pictures. If what you are saying is true, it is the opposite of what I thought. Here are the same pics with text, sorry I am so confused.

Hi,

I was talking about the animal on top on the pic of the three babies (labelled: Male? I thought female)and I knew that this was the same as on the second pic.
I am not an expert on ornatas, but my impression is that animals which do early show kind of an vermiculation or spotting and do early loose the big dark stripes of the hatchlings, normally turn out to be males.
I still may be wrong, especially if the animals are not siblings.
What does the breeder of your animals say?
He should know best.
Once, I think Thomas Wilms mentioned that there is an easy way to sex ornata hatchlings, but I do not reach him to get the quotation and I completely forgto about the details.

best regards

Ingo

P.S.: My "1,2" referred to the first pic. Sorry for the confusion. Of course in total you have more ornatas...

I appreciate you taking the time to answer. I am sure there are experienced keepers that have an idea. I have read as much as I can about them but it is still somewhat confusing, I am sure I will get the hang of it someday but need a little help now.

I do not know who the breeder is; they were bought as “Captive Breed” babies, imported from Europe. I found out after the fact, that the CB part is questionable at best. Still, I have them so am doing my best to care for them and learn more about them (I read all I can and did before I got them). I would not recommend newly imported animals to anyone! These have settled in nicely though and are doing well.

Thanks again

Vonnie,
Thanks for the complements; it has been a learning experience. All have settled down very well but the larger dark one is extremely tame and is the first with his “paws” on the glass when ever anyone walks in the room (it is probably because he is always hungry and looking for a handout). They always have some kind of food in front of them though. They are certainly different from Bearded Dragons too; our Dragons would cook at the temps these guys seem to like (120 to 130).

They are absolutely beautiful and growing so well. Congratulations on a job well done, they should be great looking adults.
