Pics of the former escapee

BobBull Apr 03, 2006 03:17 PM

As I stated below my cat found my missing axanthic female. It escaped January 2005 and I found no trace of it until now. The cat was making a racket outside the basement door. I grabbed the camera to try and get some hunting shots. I took a couple of pictures before I realized she had a snake. Then it hit me "Thats my axanthic" I shouted. I startled the cat and scooped up the very cold yet active snake. Air temp 34f, I might have to rethink the "hibernate thru winter" paradigm.

I think this is a testament to the hardiness of these animals. She was produced by Bluerosy 2004.

Good kitty! I've heard so many stories about dogs and cats finding lost critters. One of my dogs found an escaped red milk of mine. he likes to grabs things and fling them so I was lucky to get there when i did!

Now that's what I call a happy ending!
Better get some catnip as a reward.

Usually my cat finding a lost snake is about my worst fear! Haha Glad it worked out for you. Another 30 seconds and you might have found half your axanthic!

I too have been the benificiary of the cat recovery process.
I had a mass escape of hatchling creamsicles (I know - not kings) - 11 got out, and 10 were recovered within 24 hours. However, one managed to elude recapture for 2 weeks. Then one day...

"Honey, what are those cats doing?"

The Scene: 4 cats surrounding 1 lone hatchling, gamely holding its own. The snake was rescued alive, but showed visible internal damage from at least two canine (feline?) teeth.

The Outcome: Snake drank water immediately, ate a pinky the next day, and survived to show no permanent ill effects!

As mentioned above, timing is everything!

Great looking snake! I bet you're glad to have her back! I hope my white cat never finds any of my snakes loose. My black cat, however, thinks he's a mommy. lol He wants to take care of all my animals, so I think a snake might fair pretty well if he found it.

Pure female NE axanthics are hard to come by. I think this one should take off very quickly for you and probably breed (if fed as much as she will eat) next spring.

Congrats on your find!

.......or should I say the cats

I had and escaped red milk snake loose for about a week in the garage. It escaped out of my rack, which was right in front of the garage side door with a 1" gap under it. It had been raining alot so I thought it still might be in the garage somewhere. I looked high and low for it, but no luck. I had a few baited hides with f/t mice, but no luck. I was unthawing about 20 mice in warm water one evening and thought I'd give it one more shot, I took a piece of drift wood and dip one end in the water I was soaking the mice in, and then stuck it in the bag. The next morning I pick up the bag and dump the wood out, and here comes the milk sliding out right behind the wood. ALLRIGHT!!!!!!MADE MY DAY!!!!!

I have a love hate relationship with cats. I hate strays and feral cats yet I let mine roam free at times. I know it hypocritical but at least shes fixed. I just happened to have the basement door open while I was painting my kids pinewood derby cars or she would have had a tasty treat. I rewarded the cat with some tuna.

Rainer, I sure hope to have her up to size by next spring since the male is at Peter's breeding with his female (see ECC post below). She spent the last year in my basement and I'm guessing under the stairs in the outside stairwell. One thing I find interesting is that her weight is 5 grams less but she is much longer (8" than when she escaped. I wonder if snakes use cooler temps to grow and higher temps to metabolize and seek food? Where did she get water?

I don't know where she got water Bob but that is the one thing I worry about when an escapie has been gone a while. Young and neonate floridana kings are notorious for getting dehydrated very fast. I have lost young brooksi in less then 1 week w/o water. They dehydrate faster than any other colubrids in my experience.

I once spilled some water on the floor whaile changing bowls and came back an hour later to find a neonate escapie drinking from the spill in the middel of the floor. This was at 2 a.m. in the morning so who knows what else these guys get into during the wee hours.

During the time my escapee was out and about, he left a tiny present for me ... in my wife's panty drawer!

LOL! 20 years ago I had some leopard geckos loose on a top shelve in the closet. We found them after my wife noticed there were dozens of little poop droppings all over her purses and stuff. I guess they were trapped up there and could not get down for weeks.

Haha she's drinkin' from the cat bowl! That's where I find my escapees usually and ditto on the 2 a.m. thing!
