Chameleon and the outdoors....

beardiedude Apr 03, 2006 05:59 PM

Hey guys,

Well im goin' to IRBA ( International Reptile Breeders Association) this upcoming weekend. I do plan on grabbin' me a new cham! My problem is which one do you guys think will do best outdoors in San Diego. I was leaning towards a panther or a veiled, but am unsure on the veiled. What are some of their disadvantages?

I also have some questions too....

1. Would a chameleon have a meaner disposition if kept outside?

2. Could i place a young chameleon outdoors with a heat lamp? Or would he be too cold or scared?

Tyler, you live in so cal...help me out please..maybe i'll grab one from your table!

Like me, Tyler is blessed to reside in Vegas! IMHO, Veileds would do better outside but you must use caution! Make sure there's plenty of shade opportunities so they don't overheat.

This time of year in Vegas its now mid 70s. I have them outside for an hour from about 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM just to be safe. Overheating can happen faster than you realize!

I was at Tyler's house last night and his animals are unbelieveable! Can't go wrong buying from him!

Like Bill said, I'm blessed to live in Vegas LOL, a good 5 hour drive from the show this weekend (Friday morning, here I come). I haven't noticed a difference in disposition from the ones indoors compared to out, but I think alot of people fail to realize the qualities of a mean chameleon. There was a guy that would tell me when I came across a mean mean mean chameleon, to hold it for him (and he's smart).

Right now, I have a few panthers outside full time. The temps are between about 55 and 75, and they love it. Babies are out as much as I can keep an eye on them during the afternoons. Humidity is low, but they have sprinklers on the cages that spray them a few times a day.

Definately stop by the booth and say hi. I'll have lots of stuff there, and I assume Kammers and Amazing Blue Rep will be there also, both with good selections themselves. This show last year was great, and I think the vendors are all pretty excited about it (been too long since the last one). I'll be down there Friday afternoon.

what do you mean? If they are "mean" they have a stronger survival drive? Healthier? Other attributes? Just curious.

thanks,
lele

Hey thnkas for your posts guys.....

When i kept my baby panther chameleon outdoors he got parasites and died after. Partially i think the problem was my fault cause alot of the wild lizards got into the bottom. Dehydration never occured cause i would spray him 3 times a day for 5 minutes and that worked well. He had a very shady area in the summer and in the winter that leaves would fall and give him more light and heat...

Tyler, at the show look for a blonde hair kid with curls. You cant miss me....I'll have ona my green hoodie too....Lookin' forward to meetin ya! Yeah i have seen your animals and they are totally AWESOME!!!!!

Im so physced for the show!!!!!! Hey Tyler if i stop by your table and we talk, try and convince my mom that a panther could do well outside if i try EXTRA hard and bring him in when we get a hot spell. She refuses to believe me because of my failure with the last one....

To address Lele's question, there's a few reasons I like mean chameleons. Typically, they're agressive eaters, agressive breeders, and almost always healthy. I almost never handle my chameleons, and some of them are nice and others aren't. Seems like the really mean ones are mid sized males (6-9 months), but the few "gay," or non breeding males are almost always very docile. I've never seen a mean mean panther that didn't want to breed.

Eric, I'll keep an eye out for a nappy blonde curly haired kid LOL. I expect to be pretty busy, so you'll likely have to stop by and introduce yourself. I didn't think San Diego got hot enough for a panther to have to come in.... You're in prime territory, wish I had land in So Cal.... I'm not sure I can handle all the Democrats though LOL (KIDDING, for any of you soft hearts).

Nice political blast my friend!!!!!! Left/Right, all I know is there's some RIDICULOUS laws pending in Ca. regarding pet shops (see banner on the home page of Kingsnake). Nope, not gonna' rant anymore. Politics are like religion, no one convinces the other of his/her position and both parties ALWAYS come away pissed!
