I saw desert tortoises for sale in a local paper. Are these illegal to own? I was thinking of buying them, but was concerned because of the species. Please advise.

It is illegal to SELL desert tortoises. You can certainly adopt one from a reptile rescue. After you adopt one, you send in a form for a permit and you get a little tag that you glue to the tortoise's shell. What state are you in? If you are in California, check out www.tortoise.org. They adopt out desert tortoises.
Dont buy it, you will violate federal law. As said, adopt from a legal sanctuary.

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper stored up acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched tv. And then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus stole all his acorns, and he got a race car. Is any of this sinking in?
