Mean Baby Leo

Grunngg Apr 03, 2006 10:26 PM

My baby Leo seems to be mean. When I try to pick it up it hisses and bites at me. I haven't handled it much because of that, and also because its so fast. How should I go about taming it?

I had to laugh! That's too cute. It's not mean, just scared. Try to approach her(?) from the front so you aren't startling her so much. Offer her a meal worm then pet her head. In time she'll be used to you. If you have to pick her up, start from the front and scoop her off her feet. Hopefully she will learn to walk onto your hand.

LMAO....not at you, but we tend to hear that a lot from people when they get a new baby leo. Too cute. Being a breeder I welcome the hissing and screeching!!!

They hatch out wild, since mom doesn't stick around to take care of them, they seem a lot more mean than they really are. I would just put your hand in the viv and little the little one come to you. It can take some time. Believe me he/she won't hurt if they bite at this age. Ususally by the time they are big enough to hurt or draw blood they are so tame and docile that they won't.

Good luck, and congratulations, welcome to the wonderful world of Leos.

Everything I understand about geckos has led me to believe that you shouldn't "pet" their heads. Especially a hatchling. Unlike dogs, geckos may see this as a predator "prodding" its prey.

Squeaks are ok, be gentle, slow and don't overhandle your new friend.
