Question

chad-erin Apr 04, 2006 12:35 AM

I know this may sound funny but here it goes. I had a Bearded years ago that I was forced to part with. Now that I have things situated I have decided to get another. I fully understand how to give them a proper environment and keep them well taken care of and healthy. My question though is (and it may sound funny) if I were to keep just one as a pet only, would it be better to keep a male or female. Does one or the other go through "mood swings" or teritory problems during normal breeding seasons. In other words would one or the oter e more "chill". I only want one as a pet and don't want to deal with breeding. I just miss my old one and everytime I see them at stores at expos I just miss how "Hammy" mine was. Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.
Erin

I don't think there is much 'mood swings' with either sex, though males may get a bit grouchy once they first hit puberty. Once adult though I think males are pretty steady mood wise. Females don't seem to have any real sex spacific mood swings at all. IT really had alot to do with the individual dragon more than sex, on how mellow they are throughout their lives.

My first dragon was never as personable and mellow as I have heard other people's dragons are. It may be due to the fact I didn't hold her every day or for very long, mostly because of the hours I worked at that time. I did notice she would be more nasty during body sheds than other times, if that is any help. Perhaps others here who have kept both sexes for alot longer than I have (unfortunately only had my female for about two years or so, had to sell her when I moved 4 hours away) will have more indepth info about differences in behavior between males and females.

I agree that there aren't really sex specific moods or personalities. If I personally were to have a single dragon I would probably have a male. Most males will head bob and be more animated. The other reason is that males do not have potential to lay eggs or have the complications that can go along with it, even though not all females will lay eggs.

So if I am only getting one dragon and I get a female is there a potential of her laying eggs or being egg bound even without a male being anywhere near?

Yes, they can lay eggs without ever even seeing a male. Of course they wouldn't be fertile, but they can lay them.

My first dragon many years ago was a female and she was absolutely precious. She lived to 13 years of age (assuming she truly was 3 years old when I got her) and was full of personality. Since I have started breeding I have seen my share of the unpersonable, unfriendly (rare nd doesn't last long), and the dragons everyone really wants. Most have some personality and the more you interact the more you bring out in them. My first was a classroom pet and she loved the kids and one custodian, Pat, a tremendous amount!

Whatever you decide, interact with your pet. Dragons are the best candidates for that relationship. Good Luck!
