My hog stopped eating

snakewoman Apr 04, 2006 07:02 AM

Hi,

I have a young hognose, probably about 6-7 months old. When I first got him, he was feeding fine on frozen pinkies. Now he's stopped eating and its been a couple months since his last meal. I have other snakes but this is my first hog. I know its normal for other snakes to go a while without eating, but is it normal for such a young hognose to stop eating?

It is quite normal for hogs to go off feed. Invest in a scale (I use a digital postal scale that I got at Sams for about $25) and weigh him weekly. If you start noticing significant weight lose take him to a vet. If you have a good herp vet, it would not be a bad idea to go ahead and get a fecal done to check for parasites. It is easy to do and causes no stress to the snake. I do understand the difficulty of getting one with him not eating, but if the opportunity arises......
