EXPRESS (Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) 02 April 06 Iguana hunter dies in tree fall (Richard Charan)
A man who climbed a tree trying to catch an iguana, shot the lizard with a sling shot, then fell 20 feet to the ground, face first.
Peter Howie, 37, died from a suspected broken neck, and the iguana got away.
The incident happened at around 3.45 p.m. on Friday, in the bush near Howie's home at No 9 Road, Palo Seco.
Police said that Howie and a friend, Anil Nemai, 22, went hunting the iguana they had seen earlier in the day.
They spotted the lizard on a 40-foot-high milkwood street.
Howie climbed the tree, and shot the iguana with a piece of lead using his slingshot.
The iguana fell to the ground and Howie reportedly tried quickly climbing down the tree but is said to have slipped and fallen 20 feet.
Villagers who responded to Nemai's call for help caught the iguana, tied its hind legs and left it near the death tree.
But by the time Howie was taken away in an ambulance, the lizard had disappeared.
Howie was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Howie, a bachelor, lived alone, and was employed with Lease Operators Ltd.
Corporal Richard Ramtoole is investigating.
