Tanks vs. Rubbermaid

psilocybe Jul 29, 2003 11:33 AM

Hi,

I've been keeping snakes for a while, but am new to BRB. I just purchased one a week ago, and she is a beaut. I'm hitting all her temperature and humidity requirements (temp 80-84F, humidity 70-80%), but was wondering why everyone is so against glass aquariums or terrariums for their BRBs. I have her in a 55 gallon. Is there any specific reason for rubbermaids besides keeping in humidity? I have a ultrasonic reptile fogger that rapidly humidifies her tank. Feedback would be appreciated. Thanks,

Abhishek

Lots of reasons actually. Any idea where Rainbows come from (geography AND microhabitat)? They are found in the deep, dark, dank jungles of eastern South America under rotting longs, rotting leaves, in mud, in thick lush bushes, etc etc. Aquariums are open on ALL 5 sides!! Not exactly a nice cozy place to make a snake that's not normally seen in the open feel at home. They aren't built to see and experience tons of movement around them and would much rather be in an opaque container where they think that no one can see them.

Having said that, people keep them in aquariums all the time. No one has ever said that it couldn't be done. For sure. These things are next to impossible to kill. But when its a question of what is better, well that's obvious.

Best of luck....

I agree with Jeff, BRB's feel more secure in platic tubs. They also hold humidity better than aquariums, and you don't have to use a mister that needs to be cleaned and maintained frequently. Also, tubs are less expensive and are easier to move around & clean.

Ahh, thanks for the feedback. My rainbow loves to bury herself under the newspaper, so that could be why. I'll see how the aquarium works for now, she isn't bothered very often anyway (my cat is obvlious to the fact that i even own snakes), but if i any disadvantages to the aquarium, i'll definatly move her into a tub. Thanks again,

Abhishek

Be careful with the ultra-sonic fogger!!
I had mine on a timer, and my yearling
male BRB was stuck in the loop on the top
when it turned on! When I found him, it was
too late. They do work great for keeping
the humidity up, just be very careful!
