Ovulation Question.....

Colorfulcorns Apr 04, 2006 06:30 PM

My Banded Female just mated today but she is alot smaller than my Blizzard female was when she mated. I was wondering if some snake get bigger after they mate? Just because she mated doesn't mean she ovulating does it?
Also is it OK to put the nest box in now for my Blizzard? It's been two weeks since she mated.
Thanks to anyone that replies....

Not sure on your ovulation question. But it is better to put in the nest box too early rather than too late.

Corn snakes typically have have a pre-egg laying shed 10 days prior to laying eggs. There's no need to add an egg laying box until after the pre-egg laying shed. I usually wait a week after the shed before adding the laying box. If you add the box before this, the snake will be constantly exploring it, rather than themoregulating for best possible egg development. Also, if you use sphagnum moss in the laying box, the snake will get this all over the cage, as it moves into and out of the box.

Small females can mate and produce eggs. I recommend waiting until a female is a least 3 feet before breeding. In my experience, females bred at smaller sizes have stunted growth. It takes a lot of resources to produce eggs, and that energy won't be being used for growth.

My banded is 4 years old. She didn't "bulk up" like my Blizzard.
So that is why I was asking if she will still produce eggs or if she mated for no reason.

No one will be able to give you a valid answer on that. No snake should be used for breeding is it does not have enough weight. There are many stories of snakes dying because they couldn't handle egg-laying (either they were too small or did not have enough body weight).

She eats alot but she didn't gain extra weight like my blizzard.
She has always been healthy and active.
I bought her from a person and she came with 13 babies that she had produced so I know that she has been breed before. I was just wondering if some snakes get bigger after breeding or if some snakes lay smaller eggs or if she might not lay as much as others.....
Sorry for all the questions....
but last year before I had to sell 14 of my snakes I had an Anery that layed 20 small eggs and I didn't see any noticable difference, then a couple of weeks later she layed another 15 small eggs.

She shed on feb 21 and again on apr 3. Is it possible that she will lay soon? If so will they be fertile?
