with all this rain.....

Crotaphytuskidd Apr 04, 2006 11:22 PM

I can only wonder what is in store for us this year.
It is late rain, so can anyone tell me if this pushes back
the wildflower growing season? I have only two weeks ago started seeing P. rugosus activity at any regularity. It just seems that many herps that I have seen active well before now haven't appeared yet also. So can we expect a good, if not late herping season? Any thoughts or insights on this are welcome.

The odds are there will be a very poor wild flower season at best. A great many of the annuals we see in the California desert actually germinate in late fall with the first rains then. If they germinate then get no follow up rain they are doomed. I saw a prime example of this recently when checking out an area in Johnson Valley. In about Dec. had noticed numerous small primrose plants coming up, last month they were gone, victims of the late rain.
