Cage size?

jennrosefx Apr 05, 2006 12:55 AM

Is a 10 gallon tank large enough to comfortably house a male western hoggie throughout it's adulthood? How large to they generally get?

I will soon have a vacant 10 gallon (the ratsnake currently housed in it is growing like a weed!) and a few people mentioned I could keep a male hoggie in there...but the only hognose I've seen was a female and there was no way she could live in a tank that small!

Thanks!

a 10 would be pushing it, a 20 gallon would be perfect, but if you are really pressed for $$$ i guess that would be ok, 20 gallons are only 25 though.

$ isn't the issue at all. I don't really have the space for anouther 20 gallon in that room. My thinking was simply that since I will soon have the empty 10 gallon, that perhaps I could find something that could comfortably fit in it. But yeah, I had a feeling it might be too small. Guess I can always get that Tarantula I've been thinkin about.

Thanks!

i know what you mean about not having enouth room, i have 10 tanks in my room. if you are looking for something small you could fit three-6 viper geckos in a 10 gallon, or a leopard gecko or darts- there is a lot of stuff that could go in a ten gallon, here are pics of what viper geckoa look like and their tank i have mine in. if you decide to get anything above i can help you with the care if you need it, it is kind of hard to find a decent care sheet for viper geckos.

Viper geckos are cute. I'd love to see a caresheet. However, I'm not even sure those would work...it's a short, not a tall...so the tank is only 7 inches tall. A leopard gecko would work, since they don't "climb" the walls, but I don't know how happy a viper gecko would be.

as far as the hight of the tank, that is fine. i have two in a regular 10 gallon and haven't seen them climb the walls in 6 months. they did more when they were younger. i have found they like to be kept in pairs, they are very friendly and are out more during the day when there is more than one. they are nocturnal, so just keep the temp. above 70F. Give lots of hiding spots. for feeding, just see how many are left over in the cage, i usually do every other day 5 and thats for 2 of them, they eat more in the summer. have water available or a humidity box. if you have any more questions jsut ask. good luck!

I was just reading this thread and thought to myself, that a 10 gal, is probably too small for most snakes, and I was gonna post saying maybe an invert would be something you could get, lol...guess you had read my mind....

Is he a hatchling, yearling, or adult? either way a 10 gallon is fine, if the little guy is provided with lots of substrate. with all my snakes including hognoses. I keep them in smaller container than what they need. In my opinion it helps in feeding response. Ive hardly ever had trouble feeding a neonate in a glade-ware container. once they reach 10-14in I move them into a 6qt sterile shoebox rack. When they reach 2-2.5ft I move them into 6qt rack system, which is the size I house my adult male hognoses. 28qt is where I keep my 3.5-adult snakes. I think keeping hognose males in smaller cages are perfect because as we know some males tend to not feed very often, but all my males eat almost as much as the females in proportion with their size.

thanks mike

You had better check you state regulations as to cage size. Especially if it is a species that is native to your area. Florida is very specific.
