lighting question

mkco79 Apr 05, 2006 02:26 AM

I am going to be getting my first beardie in a few weeks from jmarchon.
I plan on useing a sunglo desert and tropical terrium lamp for the heating and its listed as putting off UVA rays. I was wanting to know if i would need another light for the UVB rays? Is there a bulb that puts off both rays?
Do i need to use another light or would this one work by itself and provide what is needed?? Any advice would be great!

Thanks,

I personally have never heard of that lamp for reptile use. I would stick with more conventional, conditioned lamps such as Reptisun 10.0 (flourescent or incandescent coil) or Mercury Vapor UVB Bulbs such as ZooMed Powersun. As for basking, the Mercury Vapor Bulbs can be both a basking and a UVB source, whereas the flourescent lamps/incandescent coils will need an additional basking lamp (which can just be a normal household 100-150 watt bulb, depending on what wattage is needed for your enclosure). Good Luck.

The bulb I stated in the original post is made by EXO TERRA, its the SunGlo Daytime lamp and is sold in petsmart stores. Does anyone else use these bulbs?

that bulb is strictly a basking bulb, it doens't produce the needed UVB rays. All UVB producing bulbs do produce UVA light, though the reverse isn't true.

Buying the petstore basking bulbs to me is a waste of money. They do not last any longer than regular household bulbs (except maybe the really cheap household bulbs) and cost up to 10 times as much. Regular light bulbs work fine as basking bulbs. It is better to put the money into a quality UVB producing light, such as Repti-sun or Repti-glo (I think the repti-glo is made by Exo-Terra so if the petstore has their basking bulbs, they should have their UVB tubes as well).

We use standard light bulbs as discussed in this thread for our basking bulbs and Chromalux Lumichrome 1XX UVB Bulbs for UVB lighting. Since switching a few years ago we have been very pleased and the shelf life is much longer than many reptile bulbs. We purchase from LLL Reptile usually. Just wanted to let you know the set-up we currently use.

Ok thanks for the replys. You say that you use the bulbs for UVB but what about UVA? Does the bulb produce both rays? Sorry to be such a pain all but this is the last detail i need for my viv and its one of the most important so i want to make sure that its all right and ready!

Thanks again.

The Chromolux bulbs are all we use. They are rated 98% CRI. Sunlight is 100%. The rest is all about diet and heat.
