Breeding without cooling?

senorsnake Apr 05, 2006 11:41 AM

I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that it was possible to breed boas without doing a cooling cycle, and that some keepers practice this. How does this work, does anyone have experience with it?

I used this method this season. I had 4 of 6 females take. I just introduce the males into the females cage starting in september and they did the rest. I may try cooling next year to see which way works the best for me

Did you take them off feed or change the lighting, or did you just put them in there?

I stop feeding them about 3 weeks prior to intorducing them. Other than that I dont do anything else. I would like to try cooling because the 2 that didnt take have been courted and copulated with for 5 months with no signs of ovulation. They are still going at it right now.

I never cool my boas, just take them off feed and change the light cycles they do the rest. The last 2 years I had 3 slugs out of 4 litters, this year my het female had 3 slugs and 30 healthy and my albino female had 34 triple hets all healthy no slugs.Just my 2 cents.

I bred last year and this year without cooling. I did put them
off feed for about a month.

It was really them going off of feed on their own. They stopped
eating and were incredibly active, pacing in their cages and
rubbing their snouts trying to get out.

She had zero slugs last year and 17 healthy neonates. I actually
didn't want to breed them this year, but the female just drove
me crazy. I had to tape up her Neodesha with cardboard filler
to keep her from destroying her nose because she kept jamming
it in the little space adjacent to the cage doors. Funny the
male was like that last year, this year it was the girl...

No cooling goes on in this house. Much like the others who posted. I tape newspaper on half of the front of each females cage when I introduce the males, and keep the window shades down in the snake room - nice and dark. --David

in "The Boa Constrictor Manual" by Phillipe de Vosjoli, Roger Klingenberg, DVM, and Jeff Ronne. Mr. Ronne does an excellent job of describing his method (which by the way he doesn't cool) and the results he gets from this. I think this would help answer most of your questions if they were not already.

Even without the chapter on breeding, The Boa Constrictor Manual is a must have for any Boa enthusiast. I highly recommend it! Hope this helps.
