easterns initial breeding date.....

jodscovry Apr 05, 2006 05:55 PM

my easterns are from central fla so they may start sooner than all the other states where they occcur, also I recently drove back to the orange grove that I found them in and while driving around I found two 6' females dead on road and appearing to be gravid so I razored their side open to see what stage of gestation and both only had excessive amounts of fat cells all stored up but no sign of eggs.... when would eggs start to form ? I would have thought so by now...JB

You know, I have had mine actually lay later in the year than say, racers here. But to be honest, I've had them lay at a few different times so who knows? Some wild ones may have laid their eggs already Joe.

hey thanks mark, did you read my earlier post about how i found a few big dor females that looked to be gravid but after a lil feild surgery i had discovered only lots of collected fat cells and i mean alot, imagine ( 24" x 1" ) so i was under the notion these animals were emerging from hibernation and I also should mention all ten snakes were fat, some of the fattist coachwhips I ever seen so i cant imagine they laid and then gained so much weight so soon and the five I have left (2.3) dont seem to be in the mood now and of all the books I have only one has a reference to first date of emergence and puts them at april 18 but i figured since we are so far south....I'd ask......JB

I was in Citrus Co FL ON 3/24/06 and razored a 3.5 dor female. She was popping with eggs. Also caught an obviously gravid female in St John's Co FL on 3/25/06. Looks like you were a couple weeks early.
