What to do?

4goodnesssnakes Apr 05, 2006 09:44 PM

I am looking for some advice on what to do with this little garter snake. My dog found it in our yard in October. The thing was barely moving, emaciated, dehydrated and had a scared over injury that went all the way around its body. I took him in not expecting him to survive but its been 6 months and he is doing great. He has grown, is eating, drinking, and pooping. I am just wondering what to do with him? I was going to let him go but his injury does seem pretty severe. He moves funny although it is better. He has some trouble getting food down. You can see him trying to work it down but it doesn't go past the scar. It is going though I haven't had him regurge on me yet. I did notice when I try to give him larger worms he wont take them. I think he knows that they wont go down. This is him right after he ate a few days ago. The worm was on the large side for him but you can really make out his injury. Any thoughts?

huh, interesting. You definitely cant let him go. If it were me, Id just keep him. You are kind of responsible for him now. But if you dont want to keep him Im sure you could find someone who would be willing to take him in. Maybe check with a local herp society. Good luck with him.

It almost looks like something got wrapped around him and embedded. Have you taken him to a vet? Has he shed since you have had him?

he wouldnt survive in the wild and he is already adjusted to captivity, id just keep him. and besides if you let him go he could spread germs from your other herps to the wild.

do you handle him? has the scar gotten smaller? if the scar gets smaller with every shed which usually happens with minor injurys than it should be gone in a year or two.
