My dad (who semi-ironically is a preacher) got me into them. He was going to school for Herpetology before he went into the ministry....so we always grew up going out and catching snakes and such with him. The first time I decided I wanted to breed was when I was 16 when I got my first Boa....oddly enough my parents supported me and so I went crazy from there....lol

I grew up in the woods of Michigan chasing snakes, turtles, frogs, deer, rabbits and so on. Animals and the outdoors have always been a part of my life. Now, I pass it on to my kids with the zoo they call home.

I watched that movie when I was a year and a half old and became fascinated. I studied everything I could (as much as you can study for being a baby anyway) until I was 6 and got my first ribbon snake. I'm 25 now, so I've spent basically my whole life obsessed and have actually kept them for over 19 years. All started with Indy falling in the snake pit though. Cool question.

no one really got me into snakes. Im the only one in my family who has them. I just fell in love with them all on my own. My very first snake was a female ball python. She was wild caught, so i learned a lot about snakes from her. She didnt want to eat,and she had bad sheds. But i worked through it and ended up keeping her for 12 years before she died on me. I dont know how old she was when she died. She was already an adult when i got her. I now keep 4 ball pythons,1 male and 3 females all of them are normals. I wish there was a ball python breeder who lived close to me. So that i could breed my females to a pastel. One of my females is 6 feet not sure of her weight. The other female is about 4 and 1/2 feet again not sure of her weight.I just know that they are both fat and ready to breed.I would breed them myself but my male is still too young.Anyway i hope this helped you all get to know me.I like getting to know people and see who im talking with.

Thats a great question! I caught my first snake when I was 2 years old and I actually have a picture of it. From then on I was hooked. What about you?

oc-balls Apr 06, 2006 01:57 PM

I've always had reptiles, ever since I was a kid, catching Kings and Gophers in the oil fields of Fullerton Ca.

My mother (who is terrified of snakes by the way) still tells the story of when I was 10 years old. I was walking up the hill, returning from a very successful snake hunt. I brought home one of the largest Gopher Snakes either one of us had ever seen. She tells me it was wrapped around my neck, and its tail was still dragging on the ground (apologies go out to that snake). Thanks go out to mom for putting up with my obsession!

The first snake I purchased was a Mo, a Redtail Boa. I got him from a pet shop when I was in high school. He was with me for 28 years, before he passed away 2 years ago.

I've always liked BPs, but at the time of my purchase, they weren't big enough for me, and seemed a little boring.

A few years later, I saw Jurassic Park. All of the sudden my interest in reptiles shifted from snakes to Monitor Lizards.

I started going to some of the local Reptile Shows, with Monitors on the brain. But each time I went I would always see the Albino and Pied BPs out of the corner of my eye. They were something like I've never seen, and so were the prices!

After the death of Mo, I turned to the Internet to see what could have been the cause of his demise. I'm still hoping it was old age, and he didn't suffer. While on the Internet I came across someone's BP website (I wish I could remember who's it was). I spent hours a day researching these beautiful snakes, learning everything I could. About a year ago, I bought my first baby girls, and I can see it's all down hill from here.

I'm hooked!

This post turned out to be a little longer that I planned, sorry about the rambling!

Ive liked them as long as I can remember. Id always buy snake books in elementary school when the book bus would come around. Mom finally let me have one when I was ten, and for the past 20 years Ive always had at least one snake in the house. One of my best memories was finding some eggs in a hollow tree branch when I was 10-11-12 years old. I took them home and tried to mimic the environment I had found them in the best I could. The guy at the pet store said I probably wouldnt be able to get them to hatch. Well, one day I go to show a friend these eggs I found and instead I find 5 baby green snakes crawling around. I was like a proud daddy.
I made it up to almost 30 snakes but got rid of most last year. It was just a random collection of snakes I liked. Now Id like to build back up but just focus on balls and hogs and hopefully start breeding next year. Im trying to reach Snakedom, its kind of like Nirvana for reptiles.

I have been into snakes (and reptiles) since I was a wee little girl. I used to catch them all the time and hide them in my pockets so that I could sneak them into the house. I just have always been VERY fascinated with them. My first reptile I owned (which I caught) was a Blue Bellied fence lizard named Herbie. I was seven. I loved little Herbie and thought he was the greatest pet, my mom however was very skeptical.
So I guess after much fascination with them then having my first reptile pet is what gotting me starting in owning snakes and lizards. And I wouldn't trade it for the world.

When I was a little (really little) ... my dad caught a salamander while hunting and gave it to me and my sister ... we both just looked at it like it was the greatest thing ever. It held our interest so my dad got some hermit crabs...and then some other small critters... They held my interest long term... My dad was a fish breeder (hobbyist) and he would always take me with when he bought or sold fish... As the years went by i continued tagging along...and i would always run directly to the reptiles....before i knew it i had caimans, geckos, iguana's any thing you can think of that was on the market 10-15 years ago....My dad knew the owner really well and if an animal came in skinny or were less than perfect the store owner would always ask me if i wanted to take it home and see if i could save it. COOL I'LL DO IT lol....This kept me busy and I loved it... As time passed I saw my first ball pythons I had to have one ... it was cool!!!!... but after time went on it got aggressive and refused meals (typical import). I ended up with 2 or 3 of these funky snakes and it bummed me out almost to the point where I wouldn't touch snakes any more. ....Long story short I took a break for a while and focused on animals such as turtles and geckos...the easy stuff. Then when i was selling off some odds and ends at a reptile swap with a buddy... a guy came to my booth with a ball python and asked if we were interested.. i turned to my buddy and saw his interest and asked how much..he said $20 I'm like okay ... it wasn't my snake it was my buddy's ...well he got lazy and asked me if i could take care of it for him for a while because he couldn't take it home ...the snake grew on me...it ate anything i put in with it and it was cool experience ...later on down the road my buddy owed me some money so he asked if i would take his snake and his tortoise for part of the debt.... i hesitated like i didn't want it and he basically gave it to me lol ...from there on i enjoyed snakes again ... at that time i was really excited about leopard geckos and the morphs.... i would always hit the swaps and check stuff out ... came across some pastels and noticed the difference in color THEN PRICE...well i went online and started to investigate...there was some cool stuff! I knew from there i had to get my hands on a snake project... Once i had my first job and some extra space I would buy what ever i had room for. Unfortunately i got stuck with a bunch of males ... but as time went on and i knew they ate fine i sold off most of my males and bought girls...then hets... then.... here we are...im waiting for my animals to get heavy..not borderline breedable ... i want healthy breeder weights then im going to the next level.

As for those of you who asked about me, here is my story...

I was deprived of very many pets as a child as my mother was allergic to anything furry. So, I got to have fish (BORING) and birds (fun!), and that was it.
So when I went out into the world by myself, I had a chance to have more pets. I eventually started a small rescue when I could ( I LOVE ANIMALS!!! ), and took in anything people didn't end up wanting. Dogs, cats, anything, but for the reptiles, it started out with Beardies. I liked them, but they were not what fueled my fire. (They are still cool, though..)
I eventually met a lady who wanted to give me a Ball Python. I had friends that had them, but since my mother was a snake-a-phobe, I never really got a chance to really "SEE" them. So I took her in, and she turned out to be the coolest pet ever! So easy to take care of, interesting creature all around. So, I decided to take more in, and then after some suggestions from my friend Scott at Amazon, I decided to start breeding. Now I focus solely on Balls, and love every minute of it!

That's my story, and I'm stickin to it!

My Youngest son wanted a"Snakey Party" for his birthday last year... ( just try finding snake themed napkins, plates, and cups at your local partystore!) So, when doing research on line I came across a photo of a spider BP. I was hooked.

My Herp interests were discouraged as a child... the "Creepy crawlies" I was so interested in were not allowed in the house and considered inappropriate for girls. (it's always the mother's fault ha ha ha)

I'm totally Obsessed, and thankfully have a very tolerant Husband.

As Long as they're old enough to be responsible for their care, my boys will be allowed to keep whatever they like...

My mother tells me I was trying to bring garter snakes in the house at age 3. My childhood was spent looking for milks, watersnakes, etc.

I'm sure it goes without saying, but people aren't born with a fear of snakes anymore then they are born racist. Both naive/ignorant behaviours have to be taught. My parents never told me they were 'poisonous/gross/dangerous' so I just continued with my natural attraction to them. (The closest venomous snakes to me are small populations of Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnakes a few hundred miles away in western Ontario.)

I see the same 'curiosity' and 'fearlessnes' to snakes in my young nieces and nephews nowadays.

When I moved south from Ontario to Louisiana at 14 the interest grew like a weed due to the plethora of Herp species in Bayou Country. I got my first 'store bought' snake (ball python) at 16 and had a few boid species in Louisiana. I had to sell my collection when I moved back to Canada at 19.

I was 'snakeless' for maybe 3 months before buying a Snow Corn at a local pet store. Once I learned that my Snow wasn't just an albino, but rather a selectively bred captive creation I was hooked on Cornsnakes. I keep a few balls, two pairs of Pituophis (p.m.lodingi), but mainly (55-60) cornsnakes nowadays.

I'm 28 years old now, and my interest in the 'ophidians' is as strong as ever. Actually, my enthusiasm for my critters is highest during hatching season. No better summertime entertainment than watching snakes hatch. But maybe I'm biased.

Happy Herping.

My Dad used to bring me snakes and turtles that he'd occasionally find in the course of anything he happened to be doing. At first, he just wanted to keep me from having an ignorant fear of snakes. As I developed an interest, he did it because it made me happy. As a kid, I was certainly "snake crazy" and heard of ball pythons and boa constrictors for the first time. I desperately wanted one, but my folks weren't that interested in having me own something that needed mice for food.

As I grew older, the interest never left, but my need to build a career and do other things kept me from pursuing snakes in any way. I always found them interesting. I'd occasionally catch one somewhere and release it after a few minutes. In the early 90's, I lived in Oklahoma City and called Bob Clark once to talk about ball pythons. I was tempted, but I eventually decided against getting one. Over the past few years, I've started the process of researching snakes as pets, but I've always talked myself out of taking the plunge.

Last summer, I found a kingsnake and rat snake on the road near my home. The kingsnake in particular was a beautiful and interesting animal. I started the research process again and ran across a pet store near my home where they had snakes. This time, the momentum was enough to push me to make a purchase. The pet store near my home didn't know where their ball pythons were from, but another store in the area had a captive bred and born ball python in October. That's the girl that's in my home now.

I am new here. I've been "lurking" for about two weeks now. I'll tell you my story and try to keep it short....

I have always loved animals of all kinds. As a child my uncle had boa constrictors. I thought they were huge! I never thought I would have a snake in my house though. I'd just stick to my fish (nothing furry, the kids are allergic). Then I was working at the local pet warehouse and my aunt decided that for Christmas she would like to get my uncle (different uncle) a ball python. She came in while I was working and together we picked out everything a snake could need (that I knew of at the time). She then asked would I keep it at my house for about three weeks until Christmas so she could surprise him. A week later, she took my uncle to the pet store and showed him the balls. She said 'you want one of those don't you?' To here surprise, he said no they're too big. To make a long story short, she asked if I would like to keep it for my Christmas present. He only lived about a year. I think he was wild caught. But he did get me hooked! I now have my second ball python that I bought in June last year as a very small baby. She is growing like crazy and is the friendliest snake I have ever seen. She craves attention! Maybe one day when the kids are grown I will take this another step further and get a few more and try to breed. But for now she is just a beautiful pet.

Hope I didn't bore you too much!

I think my addiction started back when I was about 3 or 4 - my older brothers caught some kind of wild snake while we were on vacation. They put it in a box and thought it would be fun to scare me with it. Unfortunately for them I opened the box and just thought he was the cutest little thing. I insisted that we keep him and luckily my Dad complied (probably to teach the boys a lesson). Unfortunately a few days later the little bugger "escaped" - it wasn't until a few years later that my Dad finally fessed up to letting him go. Thereby indebting him to take me to the snake store and by me another - my first BP - whom I named Baby and kept for 20 some odd years until he passed on.

My kids will probably blame me for their addiction.

My first interests were directed towards dinosaurs, and eventually I realized I could never have a dinosaur because they were extinct, so I got a few snake books from the store. My parents were of course against the whole thing for a while (they are afraid of snakes). I was 6, and wouldn't be able to take care of the little guy by myself. Eventually they caved and bought me a baby desert kingsnake with intentions of taming him before I could handle him much. Of course with them being afraid of snakes (it didn't help that the snake was very aggressive), he didn't become tame, and around 2-3 years after getting him, they made me sell him, which was such a sad day. Even though I wasn't able to hold him, he was still my pet, and I loved him so much. I still miss little Sparky now, and I wonder what he would be like if we had been able to tame him and keep him. He'd probably be pretty huge by now!

So after that, I went through a lot of snake phases on and off and it mostly made my parents mad. I remember one year we had a 10 gallon fish tank in the basement (now holding crickets) because our fish had recently died. I took the tank, the top, an office lamp, a water dish, a box with a hole cut in it (hidebox), and newspapers, set it up like a snake tank, and put a rubber snake in it, just to see what my mom would say. Eventually, years later (when I was a freshman in high school), I finally convinced my parents to let me get another reptile. An adult bearded dragon who was absolutely filled with parasites, and has always had problems. I still have him though. After I got him, I was planning on trying to convince my parents to let me get a cornsnake, but then I got a girlfriend and things kind of slowed down until I went to rescue an overweight mali uromastyx (fat sam) the night before christmas eve 2 years ago. She was in real rough shape, with her huge burn scars and her desire to just lay in the corner of the tank and not eat. My parents were terrified that she was going to die, because she had been in horrible care for around 8 years at least, and it was the christmas season. A few days after getting her set up, I was so excited to see her eat, and she's still going strong now, and still just as fat!

So that brings us up to about two years ago. Last year I decided to get a leopard gecko because, since we still hadn't replaced the fish in the family room, we didn't want to leave the corner empty. We needed some life, and the leopard gecko was a great decision, he's a great little guy. Just in November my father and I got the reptile itch again (actually, the only time he was really all for getting another reptile). We decided to pursue something he wished he had been able to do as a kid, and get a pet tortoise. A little baby Russian tortoise, to be exact. He's great! We're going to get some more in the future and try to start a small breeding project.

So, finally, we get to the ball python. I got him two monthes ago. My favorite local petshop was going out of business, and I was purchasing up a bunch of books and magazines they were selling for cheap. One of the magazines was REPTILES magazine's annual issue (Reptiles USA or something like that). They had an article on cornsnakes, so I decided after a while to go out to a local reptile shop and take a look at cornsnakes. I asked the owner (who had sold us the kingsnake many years before) what he recommended for someone basically starting out with snakes. He told me cornsnakes, texas ratsnakes, and ball pythons (and he pointed to a couple of containers of baby ball pythons that had just come in). I opened the container and held one of the babies and I was in love. I came back the next day with my mom and showed her the same snake I had held. She told me to talk with my father, so I did. Two days later, I took him into the store and showed him the same snake I had held earlier. That's when we bought little Steve

Ball pythons have always been my 'dream snakes'. The first time I ever saw one, I was about 5, looking through one of my first snake books. They are great snakes...this coming from someone who thought he was strictly a lizard and tortoise guy until recently.

gailt Apr 06, 2006 09:37 PM

I have to blame it on my brother Frank. As kids we always had frogs, toads, lizards, turtles, fish and so on. My father was allergic to fur and feathers. I have several brothers and we always went hunting for salamanders, toads, frogs, snakes, even earthworms. I especially loved hunting for Spring Peepers down the Cape.

I've loved reptiles since I was a kid, but my brother Frank got me into snake breeding. He collects snakes of all kinds; he loves them all, but I took it a step further and started breeding them. Unfortunately my brother doesn't have internet access, so he won't be posting here, and we don't live close to each other, but I owe my love for snakes to my brother Frank. And out of 5 boys and 2 girls in the family, only my brother Frank and I love snakes.

Names Luke. 24 Male Ct.
I've been catching Eastern Garters since I could walk.
I've caught a few water snakes, a water mocassin once (oops...haha), ringneck snake, and one that was definately a colubrid but I couldn't identify it. It was an awesome snake...and I was going to keep it, but at the time mom said no snakes.

When I finally convinced my mom to let me have ONE snake...I got a snow corn.
From there...one became four...haha.
Then I got a California king.

I had always wanted a Ball python, but being 17, even $100 was expensive for a snake...

Last year a friend of mine asked me if I wanted a Ball python, and I jumped all over it.
That started the ball craze.

Over the years I sold my corns and sort've fell out of them, but I am hopelessly addicted to Ball pythons now, and hope to be breeding by next season.

Well for me I have always loved animals. over the years I have had a lots of different animals like cats, dogs, hamsters, frogs, fish, rabbits and salamanders. I took care of an emperor scorpion for a friend once. I have always been interested in reptiles. When I was a kid I used to love to catch garter snakes but had to let them go because my of mother was afraid and did not like them. I had first experience holding a large snake In my late teens my brother in law had a Burmese that was 10 ft. At that time. But I still lived with my parents so I could not have any. Soon after that is when my brother got his corn that he still has to this day. Then my other brother got a corn rescue and bought a Columbian boa. Then years latter I met Chrissy and she loved all kinds of animals too snakes included she had a few over the years before we meet.
So she is the one I can blame for our collection now. Her ex got thrown in jail and left his rat snake behind so we had to rescue him of course. Well we went and got him dinner and came back with our first ball. That is when it all started. Now I hope to breed the balls to get a pied to add to our collection. Brian
now for Chrissy's story

Hi my name is Chrissy and I am a herpaholic
The same would go for me as a child I always had a love of animals. In my childhood I grew up with several cats, four dogs, eight rabbits, goldfish, finches, cockatiels, chickens, and pigs. I also volunteered at the stables up the street from my house so that I could learn how to care for horses, cattle, sheep and goats. In high school I was involved with the FFA and 4 H. I got into reptiles when I was about sixteen and met my first husband at that time he had 2 Burmese pythons who I would later take in when he moved away. They live to be about 25 years of age when I got them they were already at least 21 years old. Later I would take in my first red tail and ball python who I took care of while his owner was sent overseas with the army. My second BP was given to me by some guy at a local night club who said he didn't want the retched thing anymore because he didn't think it was cool anymore. I later had to adopt it out to someone I knew when I move to a place that would not allow snakes. I had been reptile free for about 4 years then I fell of the band wagon (LOL). Then my ex was sent to jail and I had to clean out his apartment and found AL and I think Brian covered the rest of the story for me.Chrissy

We were living in california at the time. My dad was in the navy, and was gone a lot, but he happened to be home this particular weekend. I was six, just before we moved to NC, and outside playing when I saw a snake, and a rather large one at that. I wasn't sure just what kind it was, so I pinned its head down and picked it up, and took it inside to see if Dad could help me out and id it. It was a 6 foot long gopher snake (or might have been a bull snake.... can't quite remember...) anyway, I remember my parents freaking out and how funny I thought that was. After that, I was hooked. I learned everything I could about them.

I think for me, it was just the allure of knowing a lot about a subject most people go out of their way to avoid. After that, I just became fascinated by the way they move, the way they survive, and the way they are engineered to be some of the most efficient and effective killing machines on the planet. Then I started doing research into the genetics and venom aspects of snakes in high school, and that opened up a whole new world for me.

Plus, they're friggin cool!! lol.

what got me into ball pythons...
well about two years ago my parents decided that they where going to seperate, the house was a very stressful place to be in so i moved live with one of my friends.. i started working at a pet shop that was on the other side of town.. the job gave me something to do because my friends house wasnt too exciting, they would either be home when i was at work, or they would be out when i was off work.. so it was boring there for me, and they had a cat named Lucy who was nice but im not really a cat person.. so one night my mother gave me $60 and i sat outside of my friends house thinking to myself... what should i buy...i just wanted something that i could connect with and to take my mind off of the things in life that where hard to handle.. i knew my other friend laruen had a few 10 gallon tanks that she has never used, i could borrow one till i can get paid and get a 20 gallon breeder tank.. so i called my work and asked marty if we got any new snakes in.. he said yeah we got a few boas and pythons.. i asked if there was any ball pythons and there where two new ones.. so i got my shoes on and i took the train to my work and went to pick one out.. i held the first one and loved the coloring and the nice blushing, and i asked some questions like do they bite alot? (ive never owned a snake before this) and marty put the snake up to his face and said.. would i do this if they bite alot? i said i dont know marty youre a strange person.. he showed me the other ball that was there and it wasnt as eye catching to me.. so i bought the first baby and he put it in a paper bag and stapled it shut and i bought a ball python book to read on the way home.. i remember this like it was yesterday, i couldnt stop myself from opening the bag to look at what i got.. she was so small that she fit into my palm, she was scared and i knew that so i put her back after i patted her on the head.. as soon as i got to my friends house i called my boyfriend who hated snakes at the time, but doesnt any more.. i said when you get home i have something to show you.. ha. i wasnt sure on what to name her cause i didnt know if she was a he... jake the snake popped into my head, so did jacob, but the name logan stuck out cause its a girl or boy name.. i always said to everyone who watched her eat that she was special, and about 4 or 5 months after owning her she did a color change and is still going through the img phase.. im happy i picked her..
but ever since i bought her, myself and my boyfriend have found ourselves totally into these animals.. my family doesnt understand how a person can love a reptiles... haha, they think we're crazy or something..

Under a dead ohio sky,
Eleven has been and will be waiting,
Defending his light,
And wondering...
Where the hell have I been?
Sleeping, lost, and numb.
So glad that I have found you.
I am wide awake and heading home.

I have always had an addiction to animals but my love for ball pythons came about one day when I just happened to inquire about a pastel bp on Kingsnake. I emailed a guy (Jarred Carr) and spoke with him on the phone, after talking to him for a few miutes and finding out he lived literally about a 2 minute drive away from me I went to pick up my pastel. When I got to his house and looked around at his collection the very next day I got on Kingsnake and put all my boa morphs up for sale to start into BP's. I have now passed my need for animals onto my sons we now have birds, fish, cats, dogs, hamsters, and not to mention my BP's and the rats. I couldnt imagine life any other way.

GGGOO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!
