Any idea on what local these guys are?

jazzmachine Apr 06, 2006 05:03 PM

We recieved a pair of supposed Venezuelan Rainbows, but after hearing some info regarding that specific local, we find it hard to believe that they are. If anybody knows specifically what these may be, that would be of great help to us. Thanks for any and all replies.

Look very much like E.c.crassus to me.

Herpquest,
....Crassus which are from well south of the equator are bigger heavier snakes than these snakes from Guyana and Venezuela. They are colored and patterned somewhat like these snakes and that is why these snakes which are an unrecognized subspecies were originally mistakenly identified as crassus by the importers.Information about Epicrates cenchria was hard to find back in the 80s but one of the few popular books of the time did have a crassus photo and I believe that photo was most often used to make the misidentification of the Guyanan Rainbows.

Jazzman,
...Your snakes are commonly called Guyanan Rainbow Boas. It looks like they are in good health. They are an as yet unrecognized subspecies. They could have come from Guyana or Venezuela or in close proximity to those countries. There have been a bunch of them exported out of Guyana. I am not sure about whether any have recently been exported out of Venezuela. An internet search through the CITES import/export database would reveal how many Rainbow Boas have been exported out of which countries.

HI,

Nice animals whatever they are!!

How old are they and how long/heavy? There's some pictures of Venezuelans on www.rainbowboa.co.uk which seem a lot more mottled than yours with less defined markings.

Here's a couple of pics for comparison. First Paraguayan - heavy body, small, long head and small eye, more bronze on the back. 5ft and over 4lbs.......

Next a Guyanan - bigger head, lighter body (can't really tell in this photo)and bigger eye. 4ft and under 3lbs...

Yours do look somewhere in between the two but would say more Guyanan in my opinion and not like Venezuelans.
Hope this helps

Hey thanks for the all the replies and especiall the comparison pics. They definitely helped to show the subtle differences a little better. The female is around 4 feet, and the male about 3-3.5. They are supposedly proven last year, don't know how accurate that is though. Still trying to track down all the info about them. Thanks again, and i'll try and get some better pics up tonight, they both just shed and look great right now. Thanks again.

Looking forward to seeing more!

I read somewhere on the net that Guyanans have now been elevated to Epicrates guyanensis but cannot find any information to back this up (Matz, 2005) and can't remember the site i saw it on.

I am getting some Venezuelans in the next few weeks, though they're only about a year old. It will be interesting to see if they turn out similar to yours.
