bowl feeding question

anafranil Apr 07, 2006 04:56 AM

I was thinking of how the perfect feeding bowl looks like?It should be tall so crix don't jump out and opaque of course.perhaps white so it contrast well with the dark crickets, everything I think of has some serious disadvantages. The crix find their way out or the cham never sees them. Please give me some light overhere, any suggestions are welcome. Can I have your comments on how to make an effective container?
Of cource I know there are a lot of people out there who never bowl feed so I guess the post goes to those who do..
Thanks a lot,
Any chances for some pics?

It's alright if some crickets escape. Your chameleon is actually more likely to go after one out of the bowl then in it.

A hot glue gun works the best to attach the screen.

Do the crickets actually remain in the jar?has it been "tested" by anyone?

Quite a few keepers (including myself) use this method for cup feeding. Crickets for the most part are too stupid to figure out that one good jump will get them out of the feeder jug. So as long as you are gentle about placing them in there, the majority will stay in the jug. It’s not 100% escapee proof … not too much is. It’s a great design/idea though and I'm pretty happy with it. The key is the bottom lip of the jug ... you want that several inches high ... high enoug so a king worm has problems crawling out. A lip too low will easily allow a king/horn worm to crawl over and get out.

I think cricket's tendancty to jump varies. It seems most will sit still and slowly die before they think about jumping out - they only jump if startled, grabbed, or something similar. Some will jump if they are unable to climb.

I got sick of taking my chances.

Well, I got a little annoyed at seeing escaped crickets all the time - my wife, on the other hand, she put her foot down.

So, that was part of the reason I started to make cricket proof cages. The only escaped crickets I have now are ones that escape as I'm trying to put them in the cages.

The milk jug with screen works - I've tried it. For some reason, none of my deremensis would eat from it. All the others love it.

My cage's cricket proof I just want it for convienience and better control of the amount fed, anyway if you say it works I believe you ,I'll give it a try on Monday.
The funny thing with crickets is when the chameleon shoots it's tongue grabbing one,the rest are so scared that no one stays in..
Anyway I thank you both a lot
