Any herps in NW S. Carolina mountains?

Lgbrooksi Apr 07, 2006 07:27 AM

I'm going on a backpack trip on the Foothills Trail in the northwest region of South Carolina towards the end of this month -- does anyone here have field experience in that area? (I would like to know, in particular, if Eastern Kings are up that high and active during the end of April).

Any input would be most appreciated -- thanks...

On a business trip to Duke Power back in 2000, I hiked Sassafrass Mtn. one weekend, and on the road to the trailhead(Can't remember the road name or # at the moment), I found a DOR eastern hognose.

I also stopped at a local nature center on the route there was perusing a local field guide in the gift shop, that said copperheads are there and I think, possibly horridus, but these are probably locally scattered populations. My local trailguide to South Carolina trails, had actually mentioned the author encountering a copperhead on the trail to the top of Sassafras Mountain.

Hope it helps. If you need more info, email me and I'll get the reference to the trail book I have at home.
