? for KennyScott about oviduct prolapse

mikebell Apr 07, 2006 08:19 AM

I read earlier about the prolapsed oviduct. What was the opinion of others as to whether this female can breed again. I had the same problem yesterday with a burmese. I was able to locate the opening in the oviduct and get the egg out, but the oviduct did seem to tear.

Mike,
I hope your female is doing ok. My female ball that went through this is still alive and looking good. The few people who seem to have experienced this, have had some die after going through this. However, I have been told that with snakes having 2 oviducts, they can eventually be breedable again. I do not plan to breed my female next year. I am going to give her the year off to recover fully. I think if you do breed her, you can only expect about half the clutch size that you would otherwise get, with only one oviduct functioning. I would think that she would still need to be watched closely while laying the next time. We'll see. For me, the female pulled the oviduct material back in herself after I washed it off the next morning. I did not have to put any additional stress on her body by shoving it back inside of her. This is the first time this has ever happened to me, so I am still learning about it too. Let me know how your female is doing. Did she pull the oviduct back in herself, or did you have to push it back inside of her? This seems to be a rare occurance, as I even called a few big long-term breeders, and they had never experienced anything like that. Forums like this are great. The few that may have had similar experiences can come to forums like this and share their successes and failures. Oh, I have been told that you want to make sure that the female has water available to her after this type of experience. Keep me updated.

She pulled the oviduct back in herself. I didn't have to cut her oviduct, but it did tear some. I was able to locate the opening. All of the eggs looked fine until the last one that caused the problem. It was hard as a rock. You could see some yolk, but most of the inside looked dark red, it was all very hard.
