My RETF turns purple at night

jfarah Apr 07, 2006 11:20 AM

Hello everyone,

I just got my first Red Eyed Tree Frog a few days ago, and I noticed that he/she turns purple at night when the lights go out. Then in the morning it promptly turns back to green again.

I assume this is the norm, I just had never heard of that in all my readings on them.

Anyhow, I'm really enjoying it and I'm sure I'll have to get more in the future.

I have a yellow headed gecko and just freaked out because I turned the light on and he was really dark too!

I didn't know that about RETFs either and I've been doing massive research since I'm getting some soon.

How old is yours? Any pics? I've read that they do best in groups of 3 or more, so I think I'll just go ahead and get 3 babies. Next year I will move them from my 29 gal viv to a larger tall one.

My little guy is really young. Im not exactly sure, but it's very small. I would definately like a few more.

That yellow headed gecko of yours isn't Phelsuma klemmeri by any chance is it? I breed those. You probably have the little nocturnal carribean gecko.

Where are you going to get your RETFs from?? I could definately handle a couple more.

Here's a pic of mine - Enjoy

Nice looking frog! Got pictures of the rest of your setup?

I don't know the scientific name but he is a yellow headed day gecko, he doesn't look like a traditional gecko, he looks like an anole with yellow stripes on his head.

I'll try to send a pic. I am looking forward to getting some RETFs. Post some pics of your setup if you can.

I just got my baby RETF and noticed he/she does the same thing too. They should cover it in one of the many books out there. They grow pretty fast...
