Duck Weed,lol

birdznfrogs Jul 29, 2003 03:03 PM

Ok, hello all...
I just went to my local Canadian tire(I"m CANADIAN), and bought some $.50 duckweed. The purpose maybe putting it in my firebellied toads, tank, or firebellied newts, of course unless you tell me its unsafe, or there's many cons.

Questions, first of all;...
-IS it a bad idea?
-Has anyone done it?
-ANyone have duckweed in there tank now?
-Smelly?

ANy input you have would be great,
Thanks
Steven

I did try it with my grays and I took it out after a couple of days! The problem is that it sticks to everything. The frogs have it all over them and you can see them trying to wipe it off. What's worse is that it gets stuck to the glass, dies, and then dries out. Then you need a razor blade to get it off! It sounds like a good idea but not for an indoor tank.

I agree 100%. There's just no way it could live in an indoor tank without encountering those forementioned problems. I have a plant called Water Velvet, it has very large leaves compared to duck weed. I don't know if WV would work, being it might stick to the animals aswell. Any Ideas about Water Velvet, Colchicine?

Never heard of it.

I have been using water lettuce that I think is very neat because small frogs can sit on it. It needs strong light however to grow.

Water Velvet is a floating fern. It reproduces very rapidly. The latin name for it is Salvinia natans. There is a site that has a listing of just about every aquatic plant used in tanks and ponds. Here is the link: http://www.tropica.com/default.asp
