Finally caught a racer!!

Obediah2 Apr 07, 2006 09:53 PM

I did not disappoint! I've read how aggressive they are and this one lived up to the hype. It never stopped striking until it was released - PERFECT!

I found two ring necks (one baby and one close to adult size), two gopher snakes (One baby and one 36" or so), and the racer. I don't know much about racers, but I thought they got pretty big, so this one must be young.

I also found what I think is a skink. I got some pictures, so I figure I 'll have an exact ID in no-time.

Have fun out there,

Jake

Nice going man. I hadnt found any racers up until this year, but I have found 5 or 6 this spring. They are pretty hard to get your hands on unless you flip them. Nice pics too....

Thats awesome. It looks like a young whipsnake. Those guys are nearly impossible to capture. Kevin Fisher

I reckon you're located in California? They call whipsnakes racers there. I found my first one in The Golden State a few years back. The other people who posted are right - they're very hard to catch. It looks like Masticophis lateralis.

That looks like a western skink. I found a few of those too. I'm still looking for my first Pituophis, hopefully 2006 will be "the year of the gopher snake" for me.

I know you sometimes go to Vegas this time of year. I'm going to be there from the 17th to the 19th. I'm going to try and get out to Red Rock either one morning or one evening - I'll lkeep an eye out for you.

Have Fun,

Jake

If you are ever in LA let me know - I come across more Gopher Snakes than anything else!
