Snake acting a little strange

Dork Apr 08, 2006 12:34 PM

I have an adult snake (emory) that has been blue for an extended period now, she has been opaque for 2 weeks. For the past 3-4 days she sits with her head slightly raised above he bottom of the container and with her mouth open. If i disturb her, she closes it. When I touch her, she moves around normally. Outwardly she seems fine with the exception of being blue and sitting wih her mouth open. I did place her in a water container with a small opening to see if she would soak, but she comes out. This would be her first shed since coming out of brumation Any thoughts and or suggestions?

i dont know if this helps but my black rat was in blue phase a long time and had trouble breathing. he would open his mouth to breath a lil not alot and you would hear squeaking from his nostrils. when he finally shed, i had to help him out of it, but his nose was clogged up with skin. it might be something completely different but thats what happened to me

It sounds logical. My snakes never stay in the shed phase for more than a day or two, so I have never had that problem. I would imagine that if it takes longer than normal, the nostrils would get clogged. Open mouth breathing would be a logical solution to that. You could also put in a humid hide. A shoe box at the end with the heat pad. Cut a hole in the shoe box for the snake to get in and out and then put moist substrate (I use vermiculite). Being on the heat pad will cause condensation and help the snake shed

I am no expert, but I know snakes don't always soak when it is best for them. You could try to put her in a container that is too high for her to crawl out and put just enough luke-warm water for her to soak in. Not too much that she will drown, but enough where she can soak. I honestly have no idea on the open mouth question.
Good luck

Thats what I said. Something that the snake can't get out of. If it won't soak on its own, you don't want it to be able to get out. I prefer the humidity box, though
