HELP! Heat/Humidity Problems

laura_leigh Apr 08, 2006 12:57 PM

I just got my first pacman yesterday. I went to Petsmart to get all of the supplies:
5 1/2 gallon tank with a screen top(it is only the size of a quarter now)
under tank heater (which I placed on the side of the tank)
Flukers 5.5" clamp lamp and Exp Terra Sun Glo 60w bulb
Bed a Beast (about 1" deep)
and a shallow water bowl
I also got a digital thermometer/hygrometer.

now here's my problem. The heat was running around 100F so I unplugged the undertank heater. Now it is running around 88-93F. plus I can't seem to keep the humidity up. I tried placing some plastic over part of the screen top, which helps a little, but it is still only running around 45% humidity. The lady at Petsmart told me it should be around 75% what should I do? Should I lose the light and try with just the heater and see what happens? Should I spend the $40 for a misting system to help with the humidity? I am too new at this, and I can't seem to find any decent information on these guys. Thanks for all your help!

Fist thing u have to do is lose the heat lamp. It is a high watt bulb that will cook your pac and make the tank too hot.

Depending on the ambient temp. in your room (the room where u have the Pacman...) you might have to turn off the Undertank heater. Pacmans need the temp to be aroung the high 70's during the day and around the low 70's to high 60's at night. So... if your rooms ambient temp is around 71 in the day, plug in your undertank heater. And if you know that your room will fall in the mid or lower 60's at night, leave the undertank heater on. I find it much easier to make my room 70F throughout the entire day and night by using the AC/Heater thermostat in my house and I only use heat pad for my frog in the day.

As for misting... No, do not by an expensive misting system. Try to mist your frog twice a day (once in the moring and once at night). If your humidity guage is still inicating low humidity then spray more often. Live pants also help keep the humidity up. With your heath lamp gone, you shouldn't have much of a problem with you humidity levels.

My house drops down to 65F when I am gone during the day, which I am going to change to where it is around 70. otherwise it is 72 the rest of the time. I removed the light and turned on the heater. I am hoping that will drop it down a bit. What kinds of plants are ok to put in there? I know that Pothos are ok, but what are my other options???? Thanks for your help!
