CaseyHulse Apr 09, 2006 10:51 AM

Any problem feeding frozen pige to retics? Just wondering if there are any parasite problems, I do not think freezing kills trichinosis,.Thanx!

There have been a couple people here who have done this, I personally would think the biggest thing to worry about is that something that big and "solid" is completely thawed-pigs have a harder feel to them than rats and it might be hard to tell if there's a frozen spot in the middle somewhere-I know they say when shipping a turkrey(about 20 pounds) to the taxidermist frozen it takes 2 days to completely thaw-some big retics can eat a pig 2-3 times that weight.
As far as parasites I don't know.

Actually, T. spiralis, the parasite responsible for trichinosis can be killed by freezing as follows, 36 hours @ -16F, 24 hours @-22F, or 40 minutes @ -31F. I have a deep freeze and have been successful with pigs for my retics. Thawing is done in a warm/hot water bath which does take a while for large pigs. It's faster and easier to feed a few medium pigs. Hope this helps.
