Reccomended Canister Filter

the_nis Apr 09, 2006 12:01 PM

I’m thinking about switching up my filtration in my turtle’s aquarium. I was considering getting a canister filter or possibly even 2. I will be filtering a 74 gallon tank filled about 2/3’s of the way. Thanks!

Go with as much filtration as you can afford. The top of the line would be the Ehiem series, followed by Fluval or Filstar. Turtles are extremely messy animals so go with a filter thats rated 2 or 3 times the size of the tank you're using. I have Ehiem Pro II 2028's on my tanks and have been very happy with them. I've also used Fluval 404's in the past and liked them though not as much.

Would a single Eheim Pro II 2028 be good enough for a 75 gallon tank? I have read that quite a few people use dual Fluval 404's and other comparable filters for the same size aquarium. Thanks!

One should be enough for your turtle on a tank that size. If I recall that filter is rated for 600 litres which is equal to 158.50 US gallons

I've been using a Rena Filstar XP3 for about a year now and it's done a fantastic job. I post this because all the other posts mentioned the Fluval filter. The Rena is a good option, too. Some of the things I like about it are that it moves a LOT of water (I think it's rated for a 300 gal fishtank), and you can customize it with all sorts of media for ammonia and partical removal. I wasn't all that thrilled with the siphon and return tubing (plastic lengths that snap together, cheap suction cups with clips to hold it in place) but it's worked so far. One point that might save you some money, I bought it at a pet store chain (something-Smart) and I noticed a HUGE difference in the price at the store and on-line. I printed the page and the store manager matched it. That is apparently store policy. Hope this helps! David

Hey, thanks a lot! It does look like a great filter and it is a lot cheaper than the Fluval. I appreciate the help!
